▪ Lewis Grossman Council President Lewis S. Grossman is the new president of the Jewish Community Council follow- ing a hotly contested election Wednesday evening at the Council's delegate assembly at Cong. Shaarey Zedek. Although a Council. spokes- man would not announce the actual vote tally, the margin was wider than had been an- ticipated: 62 per cent for Grossman, 38 per cent for Bernard Panush. Some 400 delegates cast ballots. It was the first time in Council's history that the presidency has been chal- lenged by a petition nomi- nee. Grossman was the choice of the Council's nom- inating committee; Panush was proposed by petition of five delegates to the Council. Interest in the election drew an estimated 500 per- sons to the assembly al- though only official delegates were eligible to vote. Rabbi Brickner noted the "cruel paradox" that if Sec- retary of State Henry Kissin- ger is successful in bringing about a peace agreement in t h e Mideast, "American Jews will have nothing to rally around." Several questioners, the memory of the afternoon's events at Ma'alot still fresh, challenged Rabbi Brickner's remarks. MI 6-7272 The Walter E. Klein Youth Afraid of the High Cost Of TV Repairs?? "The council asserted that the series would stir up more anti-Semitic feelings in Aus- tria and "is apt to activate p o ten ti al anti-Semitism." The series could also create the impression that anti-Sem- itism is characteristic for Austria's population, it said. The Press Council also con- demned the publication of "inciting" letters to the editor. The council acted on a pro- test by the Jewish commun- ity in Vienna. A Jewish spokesman had said that the Jewish population in Austria was defenseless against the newspaper's biased report- ing. The series, which started on Palm Sunday, was writ- ten by Victor Reimann, a former Nazi and co-founder of a right-wing party. Rei- mann noted, among other things, "One of the main causes for anti-Semitism is to be found in the Jews them- selves," adding, "It is be- cause of his (the Jew's) will to be different and to be sep- arated f r o m non-Jewish people." The "Kronenzeitung." an- ticipating the adverse judge- ment, denouncing the Press Council as an instrument of the "united enimies of this newspaper." The minister of justice, Christian Broda, said the series contained countless mistakes. Editors of Aus- tria's state-run radio and TV called the series "irrespon- sible." A Socialist women's organization urged that the publication of the series be stopped. However, Broda said there are no legal grounds to stop the series. Will Hussein Open Third Battle Front? TUNIS (ZINS)—Press re- ports here said that King Hussein of Jordan has as- sured both Egyptian Presi- dent Sadat and Syrian Presi- dent Assad, on his visits to their respective countries, that he would open a third front against Israel should the war he resumed. According to reliable sour- ces, Hussein is said to have formally renewed a military pact with Egypt and Syria. Israeli sources tend to con- firm these reports, noting that Hussein was determined to end his isolation in the Arab world by declaring his allegi- ance to a common military goal.
