United Order of True Sis-
ters of Detroit has sent a
$2,000 check to the Michigan
Cancer Foundation as its sec-
ond annual payment of a
pledge to pay fore a nearly
$9,000 high speed centrifuge
used in MCF research labor-
atories.
Mrs. Bernard Hirsch, pres-
ident of the order, and Mrs.
Harris Crane, philanthropic
chairman, recently presented
the check to Dr. Jerome P.
Horwitz, director of the di-
vision of basic sciences.
Dr. Horowitz stated that
the centrifuge, valued at al-
most $9,000, is used in the
endocrinology laboratory to
determine whether individual
breast tumors are hormone-
dependent. Determination of
hormone-dependency is use-
ful in deciding what types of
surgery and treatment will
be necessary for the patient.
The Michigan Cancer
Foundation is a Torch Drive-
United Way agency serving
Wayne, Oakland, Macomb
and Monroe counties with
programs of research, detec-
tion, treatment, rehabilita-
tion, public information and
education.
According to Mrs. Crane,
the United Order of True
Sisters is the oldest fraternal

tion in the nation. Cancer re-
search is the focus of its
national philanthropic en-
deavors.
