Elpern Retires from UHS Post; Honored on His 65th Birthday Israel Elpern, educator, linguist, communally-minded activist, retires next month from the principalship of the Beth Achim branch of the United Hebrew Schools. A special Sabbath service has been arranged in recog- nition of his work in the Beth Achim school by Cong. Beth Achim, on June 8. At that time, Rabbi Milton Arm and officers of the synagogue will join in expressing their gratitude for his labors here. His retirement as principal of the UHS branch corre- sponds with his 65th birth- day, and numerous events are planned for him by friends and local groups on the occasion of the birthday as well as in appreciation of his many services educa- tionally. Cong. Shaarey Zedek, on whose educational committee he has served almost from the day of his arrival in De- troit in 1947, also will ac- knowledge his volunteer serv- ices. He had served, during the first years of his settle- ment in Detroit, as Baal Shaharit — associate cantor ISRAEL ELPERN — during Holy Days. He also assisted in forming many adult study groups, both at Shaarey Zedek, the Hebrew schools and in other local areas. He was a founder of Shaarit Haplayta here, • as- sisted in organizing the Parent-Teachers -groups in the Hebrew schools, and has aided many young people in advancing their Jewish edu- cation. In his native Lithuania, where Elpern was born in 1909, he was first a student in and then a graduate from the Tarbut schools which ranked among the best He- brew educational systems in the world. He studied at the Sorbonne in Paris and be- came an expert in the French language, mastering the literature of that coun- try, and upon his return to Lithuania assumed teaching posts in Tarbut schools. He was married to the former Paula Rigmond in 1939. Both suffered the agonies of concentration camps under the Nazis. He was brought to Detroit by his relatives, the Meyers and Keidan families—espe- cially through the efforts of his cousin, the late Henry Meyers. His mother, Sarah Keidan Elpern, was a sister of the late Abba Keidan, father of Judge Harry B. Keidan, Joseph Keidan, Hy Keidan and their several sisters, the last of whom, Ida Keidan Caplan, died two weeks ago. Before coming to Detroit, Elpern assisted in Joint Dis- tribution Committee activi- ties in displaced persons camps and in Paris, and those he worked with in- cluded the late Celia Baruch, who served until her death as director of the Detroit Allied Jewish Campaign Women's Division. First as teacher, then as principal of the Beth Achim UHS branch, as an' active worker in behalf of Hillel Day School, as an Allied Jewish Campaigner and as a Zionist, he received many awards. He was given a Hillel Day School Meritorious Award in 1966. There were other citations and the late Rabbi Morris Adler was among those who gave pub- lic recognition to his labors in behalf of Shaarey Zedek and the community. He is a linguist. He is equally a master of French as he is in Hebrew, and he is highly qualified in Rus- sian, Polish, Yiddish and Lithuanisn. His linguistic skills have been recognized by the World Energy Conference which will have its 50th an- niversary sessions here, with delegates from 69 countries, Sept. 22-28. He has been in- vited to be an interpreter at that conference. Elpern is not abandoning his educational career.
