Manifesto Exposes Romanian Iron Guardists (Continued from Page 1) Romanian Orthodox Episco- pate of America. Several of them live in Detroit and, ac- cording to a reliable source, meet regularly. Trifa, whose headquarters is at Grass Lake, Mich., near Jackson, is charged with playing a leadership role in a pogrom-rebellion that took the lives of Christians and Jews in Bucharest in Jan- uary 1941. He has admitted he was commander of the youth movement of the League of the Archangel Michael (Iron Guard), but has insisted he was innocent of any war crimes. Now, Trifa's status as a naturalized American citizen is under review by the U.S. I I GROUP TRAVEL A SPECIALTY HAMILTON, MILLER, HUDSON & FAYNE TRAVEL CORP. The issuance of the mani- festo was reported in the United Israel Bulletin of New York, which has consistently fought to bring Trifa to jus- tice in the courts. He faces trial in Romania, should he be returned to that country. In their message, praising the efforts of the Bulletin and Dr. Charles Kremer, head of the Romanian Jew- ish Federation of America, Inc., the Romanian Christians said: "We thank you and we thank God that justice at long last prevails on evil- doers. You have opened the door to the downfall of the devil. It comes late, it is true, but better late than never. The manifesto continues: "While the defeat of the `green head' is close at hand, it is also imperative that there be a complete liquidation of the organization of the Iron Guard Legionnaires enjoying full freedom in the U.S. and in Canada. These Trifa henchmen have masqueraded for the past 23 years as de- cent men under the umbrella of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America, which has a clandestine link with the Russian Metropol of the U.S." (Trifa has accused his foes of links with communism, al- though his relation with the Russian Metropolia is not generally advertised among his membership.) Trifa claims that his epis- copate numbers some 46,000 followers, but the manifesto asserts that the actual mem- bership of Trifa's 40 church- es is less than 5,000. The signers of the mani- festo •listed a number of for- mer Iron Guardists who "must be exposed and extra- dited •if the larger Roman- ian-American community is to have any peace." Among the names listed are the fol- lowing Detroiters: "Stelian Stanical — sen- tenced to death in Romania. He killed more than 40 Ro- manian personalities in the Jilava prison in November 1940." "Ile Olteanu — organizer and principal killer of scien- tists Nicolai Iorga and Magh- iaru. "Octavian Rosu, Mircea Bi- anciu, Rev. Dumitru Miha- escu, Augustin Suteu, Stefan Slanescu, Cornel Popa. Also included were Arhim Roman Braga, of Grass Lake, named as the probable successor to Trifa as bishop; and Chirila Ciuntu of Windsor. "Most of the above Iron Guardists came to the Unit- ed States and Canada before 1952," the manifesto says, "and all of them entered by giving false statements as to their criminal background. May the just God fulfill the righteous wishes of the sin- cere Romanian Americans so that we could live again, all of us, in unity, brotherhood, love and understanding." A local source said the list is incomplete and added the following names of former Iron Guardists who, he said, continue to hold meetings here and are in the "Trifa camp": Nicolae Smarand- escu, George Ispas and Dinu Megru, all of Detroit; Stefan Merlan of Clawson; Vasile Simian of Franklin Village; Petru Lupsor of Southfield; Valeriu Bugariu of Grosse Pointe Woods, Grigore Ta- bacu of Troy, Cezar Teodor- escu of Livonia and Dumitru Lungu and Mihal Manciu, both of Windsor. The source said that Rev. Dumitru Mihaescu of St. Nicholas Church was not or- dained by a recognized prel- ate and in fact has no the- ology background. He came to this country in 1958. 4: 4: 4: 33 War Criminals in U.S. Are Probed NEW YORK — Thirty-three alleged Nazi war criminals living in the United States are being investigated by the Immigration and Naturaliza- tion Service, a government spokesman announced.
