In Cherished Memory
of Our Mother

BECKY
CAPLAN

Who left us, May 5,
1949. Your presence is
always with us. Sadly
missed by your son,
Dr. B. B. Caplan, and
your daughter, Mrs.
Ann Feldman and their
families.

Professionally he was con-
sidered a "statesman among
insurance agents." Mr. Gut-
m a n n authored numerous
professional volumes.
Mr. Gutmann, a native of
Union City, N.J., completed
his high school studies at
age 15 1/2. He combined day
work as a stock runner on
Wall Street in 1928 and
studies at Hebrew Union Col-
lege in New York.
He received a scholarship
from the Sisterhood of
Temple Emanu-El in Man-
hattan to enter rabbinic edu-
cation at the Cincinnati school
of the Hebrew Union College
to join an older brother at
the same seminary. The De-
pression forced Gutmann to
abandon his rabbinic studies
and in 1932 he went into the
insurance business to assist
his family.
In the early 1930s he
taught religious school at
Manhattan's Temple Israel
and then volunteered to serve
as the lay-rabbi of a congre-
gation for the deaf, which he
aided for 22 years.
In 1962 Mr. Gutman joined
the UAHC board as the presi-
dent of the UAHC's largest
eastern regional branch, the
New York Federation of Re-
form Synagogues. During his
federation presidency he
founded the only rabbinically
staffed psychiatric counseling
center serving Jewish fami-
lies in the metropolitan area.
In World War II he aband-
oned his insurance business
to serve with the American
Red Cross as- a field director
in North Africa and Italy.
He also is credited as the
first president and pioneer
of the New York Jewish
Community Relations Ad-
visory Council, an umbrella
body of major Jewish institu-
tions in the city.
