Star Performers, Orchestra
at Concert for USSR Jewry

The all-star concert event,
showcasing the 25-year-old
violin virtuoso Alexander
Treger, recent Soviet emigre,
and protege of David Ois-
trakh, is slated for 8:30 p.m.
May 21, at Cong. Shaarey
Zedek.
"This musical event, pri-
marily sponsored by the De-
troit Committee for Soviet
Jewry, has won the support
of the major congregations
and other Jewish organiza-
tions as co-sponsors on a
completely dedicated partici-
pating basis," according to
the arrangements committee.
The entire proceeds are
earmarked to aid oppressed
Jews in the Soviet countries,
under the direction of the
Detroit Committee for So-
viet Jewry.
The highlight of the pro-
gram will be the perform-
ance of two violin concerti—
the Mozart Concerto in D and
the Brahms Concerto in D,
by Treger, with an orchestra
conducted by Julius Chajes.
Cantor Jacob Barkin will
be heard in a group of Ju-
deo-Hebraic songs of Rus-
sian and Israeli composers,
with special orchestral set-
tings for this evening.

Auction to Benefit
Dystrophy Victims

An art auction to benefit
Muscular Dystrophy, featur-
ing more than 200 oil paint-
ings, etchings, water colors,
sculptures and prints, will be
held 8:30 p.m. May 10 at the
Southfield Athletic Club. A
champagne and canape pre-
view will be held at 7:30.
Co-sponsors of the benefit
are the Southfield Athletic
Club and the Love and Liv-
ing Concepts Group of Troy.
Proceeds from the auction
will be presented to MD
poster children on the De-
troit segment of the Jerry
Lewis Labor Day Telethon
for Muscular Dystrophy, to
be aired on WKBD-TV,
Channel 50, Sept. 1 and 2.
