Teens Plan Fast for Freedom;
Adults to Adopt Soviet Jews
•
Flint Jewish teen - agers
will hold a "Fast for Free-
dom" 8 p.m. June 1 through
7 p.m. June 2.
The fast will be held to
protest against the treatment
of Jews in Russia and Arab
lands and to raise funds for
Israel, via the United Jew-
ish Appeal. Proceeds also
will go to help pay the ran-
som imposed upon the few
Soviet Jews who are allowed
to leave Russia.
Following the fast on June
2 will be a "Break the Fast"
party. Programing will be
held during the hours of the
fast, and adult supervision
and a doctor will be on call.
Participants will be re-
sponsible for getting sponsors
to pay for the hours that they
fast in much the same way
as in a walkathon. For in-
formation, sponsor sheets
and parent permission sheets,
call Jonathan Gotlib, 233-
4245, or the Council office,
767-5922. Those participating
are asked to attend an _or-
ganizing meeting 1:30 p.m.
May 19 at Cong. Beth Israel.
Meanwhile, Hy Klein,
chairman of the community
Community
Calendar
relations committee of the
Council, has asked that con-
stituent organizations of the
Council adopt a Soviet Jew-
ish activist family and a
prisoner of conscience to de-
velop communications with
them.
The council stated if a
POC and an activist family
were specifically assigned to
each organization, and that
organization appointed a So-
viet Jewry Committee to
work with the council, that
it would be possible to co-
ordinate a total community
effort on behalf of Soviet
Jewry.
Volunteering to inform the
organizations as to purpose
and specifics of the plan are:
Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Gold-
stein, Dr. Bert Marx, Marvin
Levey, Dr. Jack Stanzler,
Mrs. Robert Gutterman, Mrs.
Emil Schupack, Rabbi Gil-
bert Kollin and Lionel Conn.
Local Women
Urged to Focus
on Jewishness
Jewish women were en-
couraged here last week to
undertake a massive pro-
gram of self-education in
Jewishness and were given
a new view of Jewish life in
Israel and Russia during a
conference on women.
The theme of the confer-
ence, sponsored by the Flint
Jewish Community Council
and held at Temple Beth El,
was "New Dimensions for
the American Jewish
Woman."
At lunch, while marking
the 26th anniversary of Is-
rael, the women stood for a
moment of silence in mem-
ory of the 12,000 killed in
Israel's wars.
Dr. Avraham Avi-Hai, au-
thor and journalist, warned
the women that Jews will
find it easy in what he
termed "a mass-consumer,
almost post-Christian society
—to lose their distinctiveness
