Herman J. Gordon,
Projectionist, 78

Atrocity Racket Exposed

Herman (Hy) J. Gordon, a
movie projectionist for many
years in Detroit and at the
Ferndale Theater (now the
Studio North), and an em-
ploy e of Metro-Goldwyn-
Mayer in California, died
April 10 at age 78.
Mr. Gordon, a former De-
troiter residing in Woodland
Hills, Calif., was associated
with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer
from 1943 until his retirement
in 1965. He was a World
War I veteran. He was a
member of Daylight Lodge of
the Masons.
He is survived by his wife,
Charlotte; a daughter, Mrs.
Richard (Beverly) Sondel;
two brothers, Aubrey and
Sanford, both of Detroit;
four sisters, Mrs. Fred (Kate)
Harris of Dania, Fla., and
Mrs. Ben (Ida) Gould, Mrs.
Jack (Rose) Diamond and
Mrs. Sylvia Helfer, all of
Detroit; and two grandchil-
dren. Interment North Holly-
wood.

Columnist Howard Flieger,
in an article in U.S'. News
and World Report, exposed
"The Atrocity Racket," stat-
ing in part:
Now and then somebody
attributes lofty, idealistic,
patriotic motivation to the
so-called "Palestinian" ter-
rorists.
Rubbish!
They are not dedicated
guerrillas devoted to justice
and peace. They are just as
much enemies of the Arab
governments (although some
help finance them) as they
are of Israel.
The last thing in the world
they want is peace in the
Middle East. They'll go to
unbelievable extremes to
prevent it — as they have
demonstrated at the Olympic
Village in Munich, on the
searing Sahara Desert, in
Paris, Rome, Vienna, Bagh-
dad, Athens, Beirut and many
other places.
It is as simple as this:
Peace would put these gun-
men out of business. just as
the repeal of Prohibition put
the bootlegging gangsters out
of business in the 1930s. If
they lose their "cause," they
lose their jobs. Who would
want to hire an unemployed
terrorist?
These are bands of cold-
blooded killers who wrap
themselves in the raiment
of patriotism. And that's all
they are.
It is folly to pretend that
they renresent the 3,000.000
Palestinians of the Middle
East. They do not speak for
the Palestine refugees who
were uprooted by the Arab-
Israeli wars. Neither do they
sneak for the Palestinians
who live under Israeli occu-
pation . .
Not only do these assassins
not sneak for all Palestin-
ians. They don't even sneak
with one voice among them-
selves. They are divided 1w
internal rivalries (it would
he going too far to call them
"P ow e r struggles," since
they have no real power).
The terrorists like to be
known as "Palestinian guer-
rillas" or "commandos" or
"freedom fighters"—all hon-
orable titles for militant
dedication to a patriotic goal.
They are none of these things.
They are plain, ordinary
killers working for a living
at the atrocity racket. They
know the value of shock
publicity. It keeps the money
coming in—from extremists
and others on the fanatic
fringes of Arab nationalism.
Nobody knows for sure how
well the terrorists are fi-
nanced, but they always

seem to have money enough
to keep supplied with fire-
bombs to blow up unarmed
airplanes and weapons to
kill off innocent bystanders.
They have set an impos-
sible target—the elimination
of Israel—and they know it.
Most of Israel's Arab neigh-
bors are ready to accept the
fact of a Jewish state. The
days when the rallying cry
was "throw the Jews into
the sea!" are long gone.
What blocks a Middle East
peace now is terms — the
issue of real estate. No long-
er is an Arab-Istaeli settle-
ment regarded by either side
as something utterly unthink-
able.
But it is unthinkable to the
terrorists. An agreement, no
matter how tenuous or fra-
gile, would mean a peace of
sorts. And peace puts the
terrorists out of business.
They would rather have any-
thing than that.

Rabbis Set Up Dating.
Service for Singles

ATLANTA (JTA)—A com-
puterized referral service for
Jewish singles has been
started by the Atlanta Rab-
binical Association. The as-
sociation approved creation
of Jewish Compu-Date to
help fill a major need—en-
abling Jewish single men
and women to meet socially.
Rabbi Donald Frieman,
ARA president, said that one
reason for the skyrocketing
mixed marriage rates in the
area was the inability of
Jewish men and women to
meet enough interesting Jews
with whom they might wish
to associate socially.
"We hope that through the
computer dating service, we
will be able to increase the
number of Jewish contacts,
thereby decreasing the rate
of intermarriage," he added.
