MADISON (JTA)—A mem-
ber of a Jewish collective at
the University of Wisconsin
at Madison reported that liv-
ing as a Jewish group has
helped to deepen and enrich
the sense of Jewish identity
of its five men and four
women.
The year-old Havura is the
second Jewish collective at
the Madison campus. The
first is Kibutz Langdon. The
Havura collective was start-
ed by two undergraduate
students who wanted to start
`living Jewishly," according
to the Monthly Reporter of
the Madison Jewish Welfare
Council.
Sandi Wexelberg, a found-
er who is a senior studying
social work, said that for her
Judaism was a living re-
ligion and that she found it
`very stimulating to share
Judaism as a group experi-
ence."
The Havura members use
a rented house in which they
maintain a kosher kitchen.
All members are expected to
help with the cooking and
other household chores are
equally shared. On Friday
nights, Shabat services are
held, sometimes with partici-
pation by members of Kibutz
Langdon.
A half-hour documentary
about the commune was
aired on "Directions" on
ABC-TV, Sunday. The pro-
gram, a production of the
public affairs division of
ABC in cboperation with the
Jewish Theological Seminary
of America, was written, di-
rected and produced by
Arthur Zegart.

no reason to believe that Dr.
Kissinger wishes to disasso-
ciate himself from the Jewish
faith or the Jewish people."
"As a rabbi, I regret, of
course," he added, "every
case of inter-marriage since
it dilutes and diminishes the
strength of Judaism. But at
the same time I take pride
in our heritage which ac-
cords to each Jew freedom in
so personal a matter as the
choice of a spouse."
"I'm not disturbed," said
Rabbi Stanley Rabinowitz of
the Conservative Adas Israel
Congregation in his comment
to JTA. "Secretary Kissinger
has became a citizen of the
world. He has a right to do
as he wishes. He is not less
nor more of a Jew because
of his marriage. It should not
affect his standing either in
the Jewish or in. the civic
community and we have no
right to impose our practice
upon him."
Rabbi Rabinowitz who is a
former president of the Wash-
ington Board of Rabbis and
a former secretary of the
Rabbinical 'Assembly of
America, said his expression
was a "personal opinion."

not recognize the marriage
between Avraham Kissinger
and Miss Nancy Maginess. It
means, simply, according to
Jewish tradition, that they
both live together without the
sanction of Jewish law. Jews
would probably be happied

and then marry Miss Magi-
ness legally with the sanc-
tion of that church. It is evi-
dent that Henry Kissinger
does not regard himself a
Jew at all for he was sworn
in as secretary of "state on
Shabbos and his left hand
rested on the New Testament.
He flew to Moscow on Shab-
bos and disgraced Judaism
as a whole by entering into
a so-called marriage cere-
mony with Miss Maginess on
Shabbos." Rabbi Waldman
used Kissinger's first name
initially as Avraham because
he said that is his Hebrew
name.
News reports on the mar-
riage and family aspects of
the wedding involving so
prominent a personality as
Kissinger heightened general
interest and discussion about
it.
The Washington Post, in
its report, said "for years
there had been rumors of an
impending marriage. Along
with those rumors were sug-
gestions that Miss Maginess'
mother would not approve of
her daughter, a Protestant,
marrying a Jew, and of
similar suggestions that Kis-
singer's parents would not
approve of his Marriage to
a non-Jew."
The Post reported that the
bride's mother, Mrs. Albert
Bristol Maginess, attended
the wedding but observed
that "there was no immediate
indication why Kissinger's
parents, who live in New
York, did not attend the wed-
ding."
The Washington Star-News
said that "he is Jewish and
she is not." It also reported
that "it was the second mar-
riage for Kissinger who was
divorced in 1964 from the
former Ann Fleisher after
16 years of marriage. She
married Saul G. Cohen, a
chemistry professor at
Brandeis University last
year, and the Kissinger chil-
dren live with them." The
media generally reported
that the Kissinger children,
Elizabeth, 15, and David, 12,
attended the wedding cere-
mony along with Kissinger's
brother, Walter, and his wife.
While Rabbi Rabinowitz
described Kissinger as "a
citizen of the world," a West
German newspaper described
him as "the greatest Jew of
his time." The description
came after Kissinger had
consummated the Egyptian-
I s r a el disengagement of
forces along the Suez. The
expressions recalled Albert
Einstein's view that if he
were successful in his atomic
analysis the French would
hail him as a citizen of the
world and the Germans would
say he was German bUt that
if he failed the French would
say he was a German and
the Germans would say he
was a Jew.
