He served as president of Maimonides Medical Society and held of- fices in several movements. He settled in Detroit after the death of his wife, Esther Gitlin, who was active in Zionism and in many social and communal causes. Dr. Gitlin is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Isidore (Sarah) Shapiro, of New York, Zinna and Mrs. Morris (Ruth) Holtzman. A University of Michigan graduate, Dr. Gitlin played important roles in medical circles and in Maimonides Medical Society. Ralph Shiller, 54, Detroit Violinist Ralph Shiller, a violinist with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra for the past 12 years, died April 12 in a drowning accident in Miami. He was 54. Mr. Shiller, 21747 Concord, Southfield, was graduated from the Juilliard School. He was a member of the Cleve- land Symphony Orchestra, and taught violin. Harry Grossman, Ex-Legal Counsel Harry C. Grossman, legal counsel for the Yellow Truck and Coach Division of Gen- eral Motors and assistant secretary of General Motors Corp. until his retirement in 1952, died April 12 at age 84. Mr. Grossman, who of late made his home in Palm Beach, Fla., was a member of the board of trustees of Temple Beth El and served as its president from 1939 to 1941..He was a member of the Palm Beach Country Club. Kovan, a pediatrician on the staffs of Children's and Sinai hos- pitals, died Tuesday at age 71. Born in Windsor, Dr. Kovan, 16500 North Park, was an honor graduate of the University of Michigan's medical school in 1924. He was a captain in the Army medical corps in World War II. Paul Schoenstein, 71; Won Pulitzer Prize NEW YORK—Paul Schoen- stein, a Pulitzer Prize-win- ning newsman and last man- aging editor of the New York Journal-American, died April 14 at age 71. Mr. Schoenstein was famed for guiding his staff in ex- poses of crime, graft and vice. He and his aides won the Pulitzer Prize for help- ing to obtain penicillin to save a child's life.
