250 Washington Christians Join
Vigil for Soviet Jews on Easter 44

WASHINGTON ( J T A ) -
Almost 250 Christians repre-
senting the "Downtown
cluster of congregations,"
here participated Sunday in
the daily vigil for Soviet Jews
opposite the-Soviet Embassy.
The East€r Sunday demon-
stration of solidarity was de-
scribed by one of its organ-
izers, the Rev. John Stein-
bruck of the Luther Place
Lutheran Memorial Church,
as being a "natural occasion"
on Easter Sunday.
He noted that the solidarity
demonstration contrasted
with the usage of the holiday
in the past when "Easter

Tunney Asks U.S.
to Prevent Ruin of
Warsaw Cemetery

WASHINGTON - John V.
Tunney asked the State De-
partment to help prevent the
destruction of the Jewish
cemetery in Warsaw, which
he called "a landmark sym-
bolic of suffering and perse-
cution that Jews throughout
Europe experienced during
World War II."
In a letter to Secretary of
State Henry A. Kissinger,
Tunney noted the cemetery
contains "monuments to Jew-
ish statesmen who sacrificed
their lives for the preserva-
tion of liberty and freedom
of religious belief throughout
the world."
Tunney said that seven
years ago, the proposed de-
struction of the cemetery
was halted in part by protests
from American officials.
He added, "it appears that
once again our nation must
exert its influence to help
prevent the act of sacrilege
which may be initiated by
the Polish government."
