Violinist Isaac Stern will
make his first appearance
with the Detroit Symphony
Orchestra in three years at
the orchestra's final sub-
scription concerts of the

The program, which will be
directed -by the orchestra's
prinicpal conductor, Aldo
Ceccato, will include the
"Variazioni" of modern
American composer George
Crumb, the Symphony No. 5
of Tchaikovsky, and Men-
delssohn's popular Violin
Concerto in E minor, per-
formed by Stern.
Stern, born in Russia, was
brought to San Francisco as
a baby. After studying at the
conservatory there, he made
his debut at 15. He played
with major orchestras, made
his Carnegie Hall debut in
1943 and quickly became "the
world's finest violinist," re-
cording virtually all the violin
repertory, touring all over
the world — even playing for
movie sound-tracks, most
recently "Fiddler on the
