DeFunis Case to Be Discussed
in Temple Israel Dialogue

A dialogue-sermon on the
Marco DeFunis case, pend-
ing. before the United States
Supreme Court, will be pre-
sented 8:30 p.m. today at
Temple Israel.
Rabbil Leon Fram wil
speak on "The New Racial
Quota System: Should We
Jews Accept It or Resist it?"
Following the service, there
will be a discussion, in which
Samuel W. Barr, an attor-
ney and vice president of the
congregation, will partici-
pate. The community is in-
vited.
The commission on social
action of the Union of Amer-
ican Hebrew Congregations
has filed a friend of the)
court brief supporting the de-
fendants in the case, Charles

giving preferential treatment
to minorities in its entrance
policies.
Other Jewish organizations
have supported the plaintiff,
Marco DeFunis, who orig-
inally was rejected by the
university's law school de-
spite his having better grades
than some of the minority
applicants who were accept-
ed.
The UAHC supports the
university's contention that
"there is a need for a large
policy of discretion in review
of individual cases (for ad-
mission) and that the basis
of selection was that racial
minorities had been subject
to pervasive discrimination
and had only token member-
'ship in the law school and in
the legal profession."
Dissenters have charged
discrimination in reverse.

It was not because you
were the greatest of all
people that the Lord set his
heart on you and chose you,
for you were the smallest
of all peoples.—Deut 7:7.
