Moishe Rosen is not your
average Christian.
He makes that quite clear
in his little book, named for
the slogan he wears on his
T-shirts: "Jews for Jesus"
(written with William Proc-
tor and published by Revell).
Founder in 1970 of a move-
ment that has struck a com-
bination of revulsion, fear
and mockery in J e wish
hearts, Rosen claims to tell
all in 126 pages — from his
birth as a Jew to his "re-
birth" as a Christian 21 years
later.
Many television viewers
have seen Rosen, the middle_
aged doyen of a youthful cult
of born-Jews who have quit
their hippie habits and ac-
cepted Jesus as the messiah.
Ordained as a Baptist min-
ister in 1957 (a fact which
he omits from the narrative
but which is noted on the
book jacket), Rosen insists

that the only good Jew is a
Jew who has accepted Jesus.
He sees no contradiction in
terms.
There are those who will
dismiss Rosen as meshuga.
For one thing, he and his
fellow Jews for Jesus have
an amazing predilection to
"signs and wonders." In all
of the Bible (and throw in
the New Testament as well),
God didn't answer as many
prayers as he has in Cali-
fornia in the past four years.
The tribe needs a car; God
provides a car. They need
money; God sends money.
(Tevya, for all his direct
conversation with God, could
not even get a decent milk
w a go n. The implication,
Rosen would argue, is that
had Tevya considered accept-
ing Jesus, he might have
gotten his milk wagon. No
doubt the czar would have
paid for it.)
The Jewish children Rosen
has drawn.to his "tribe" are,
by and large, from troubled
backgrounds. They may have
as easily been swayed by a
swami — if he had gotten
to them first. Incidentally,
the Lubavitcher Hasidim are
well aware of that fact, and
their aggressive outreach
programs are an effective

counterweight to the Moishe
Rosens of the world.
Rosen himself, while claim-
ing only love for his fellow
Jews and Judaism, reveals a
little resentment toward his
own origins. At his first
communion, he noted, the
church service was an im-
provement over the syna-
gogue, -with its tickets for
"big events," its membership
fees and its Hebrew prayers
that always start out the
same way, "Baruch ata
Adonai . . ." Nevertheless,
Rosen and the other Jews
for Jesus make a point of
attending both church and
synagogue service s. He
doesn't say if they pay dues.
It is no wonder that this
street evangelist has en-
countered considerable oppo-
sition within the Jewish com-
munity. But is the animosity
overdone? Certainly, the Jew-
ish Defense League's pen-
chant for swatting flies with
sledgehammers proved total-
ly ineffective.
Is Moishe Rosen danger-
ous? He certainly has a
talent for quoting Scripture—
even out of context — which
is hard for the novice to
fight. Ignorance among Jews
wins one point for Rosen.
He gets another point when
young people reject empty
values they falsely attribute
to Judaism, rather than to
the erroneous practice of
Judaism.
If, in search of meaning to
their lives, they stumble on
Moishe Rosen, he may con-
vince them that Jesus can
provide what they haven't
found elsewhere.
But how many of them will
remain? For all his gran-
diose projections of mass
conversions to Christianity,

Moishe isn't letting on how
many members he has in his
movement. Or how many fall
away.
Rosen admits his big prob-
lem is Satan: "He helps to
erect barriers between the
Jews for Jesus and the rest
of the Jewish community.
And he succeeds in subtle
ways in diverting us from
always following God's direc-
tions."
Well, Moishe, here's a
question for you. "How do
you know the directions
you've been following were
sent by God and not by You
Know Who?
