THE HAPPY COOKER '8" Boris Smolar's 'Between You • . and Me' Editor-in-Chief Emeritus, JTA (Copyright 1974, JTA Inc.) POST-PASSOVER. TASK: The United Jewish Appeal has started to collect the pledges made in recent months. About $700,000,000 has been pledged so far toward the $900,000,000 UJA 1974 goal. Some of the gifts have not yet been fully collected. UJA has embarked on collecting $250,000,000 between now and the end of June. The central figure in this colossal task is Paul Zucker- man, the dynamic national chairman of the UJA. He is ably assisted by Irving Bernstein, the executive vice chair- man. Zuckerman has gained his national reputation long before he was chosen national chairman of UJA. A resident of Detroit — where the Jewish community has distinguished itself with providing quite a number of top national Jewish leaders — he has given much of his time to national Jewish causes during the last 25 years. Also money and mileage. One can see him now more in New York than at his home in Detroit. He is always busy mapping plans at the UJA national headquarters, attending UJA functions, addressing UJA gatherings, presiding over UJA leadership conferences. Not to speak of his shuttling between the U.S. and Israel on important missions. Not to mention also his flying visits to various communities all over the U.S. to stimulate there more giving for UJA. He is the kind of a leader who is determined to excel in any public effort he undertakes. And he shows it with gusto in his UJA work. FOUR DIMENSIONS: A man of strong Jewish feelings; Zuckerman believes that Judaism. in America stands on four pillars: 1. the home; 2. Jewish education; 3. the syna- gogue; and 4. dedication to Israel. He himself is the per- sonification of his own philosophical approach to Judaism. His home atmosphere is Jewish; his children are Jewishly educated; he is a member of several synagogues, and his It's easier to renew a good dedication to Israel knows no end. resolution than a 90-day note. As matters stand today in American Jewish life — when intermarriage is growing, Jewish education is on its lowest level, the synagogue is not much of an attraction to a majority of Jews — dedication to Israel becomes the major factor in strengthening Jewish continuity in America. Zuckerman does not say it in so many words, but any observer of Jewish life in this country must come to the conclusion that if there were no UJA existing, it would have to be created, not merely for proving humanitarian aid to Israel but also as an instrument for stimulating Jew- ish feelings within American Jewry. In considering dedication to Israel, one of the four major dimensions of American Judaism, Zuckerman does what he preaches and does it effectively through his ener- getic activities in the UJA. He goes further than giving generous contributions to UJA and devoting time and energy to UJA. As a prominent American manufacturer — he is chairman of the Velvet-O'Donnel Corporation — he also invests capital in Israel introducing innovations in the industry there. Enjoy the good life now!
