Saxbe's Clarification Fails to End Widespread DemandsThat He Resin (Continued from Page 1) priest, declared that "noth- ing less than a complete re- pudiation will suffice." Mrs. Holtzman termed Saxbe's re- marks "grossly inaccurate" and "brutally insensitive of the history of anti-Semitism throughout the world." The congresswoman, in a tele- gram to Saxbe, stated: "It is genuinely appalling to me that you, as the highest legal officer in this country, could so easily adopt the concept of 'Jewish Communist,' a catch phrase that has been a chief tool of anti-Semites since Nazi Germany." Howard M. Squadron, chairman of the American Jewish Congress national governing council, urged President Nixon to remove Saxbe from office if the Jus- tice Deparement chief does not himself resign and ac- cused Saxbe of "group li- bel" for "repeating an old and discredited c a l u m n y against the Jewish commu- nity." Squadron added that Saxbe's original statement and his "clarification" that followed "demonstrate a way of thinking that classifies people by ethnic stereotype." Earlier, Rabbi Alexander Schindler, president of the Union of- American Hebrew Congregations, also called for Saxbe's resignation or public apology. Other Jewish organizations that assailed Saxbe were the Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith, the Jewish Labor Committee and the Jewish War Veterans. Mr. Saxbe's Myths: NYTimes Editorial In an editorial, "Mr. Sax- be's Myths," the New York Times stated on Wednesday: The Attorney General's list of subversive organizations is, like all punitive rosters drawn up by fearful govern- ments, a shameful page in the nation's annals. An At- torney General with the good sense to scrap that useless and vindictive document need offer no explanation or apol- ogy. How, then, is one to explain the thought process, if any, that prompted At- torney General William B. Saxbe to justify his sensible w.Fe that the perpetrators of Watergate ought merely to be given "clown suits" for their "ridiculous" actions. At another time, he chose to dis- associate himself from the call by Elliot Richardson, his predecessor, for a de-politi- cized Justice Department. Most recently, in a highly untimely get-tough response to Patricia Hearst's kidnap- pers, he was called "damn near irresponsible" by the victim's father, in a gross understatement. It is fair to say that there has been no sign of malice in Mr. Saxbe's utterances — only a consistent show of hairbrain obtuseness, mixed with ignorance. But his un- thinking statements suggest strongly the limitations of mind that Mr. Saxbe brings to a once-revered post that demands judgement, balance, discernment — and common sense. W. Jerusalem Site Hit by Dynamite WILLIAM B. SAXBE action by suggesting that the list had been rendered obso- lete because Communism has lost its attractiveness to "the Jewish intellectual, who was in those (McCarthy) days very enamored of the Com- munist party"? This and subsequent non sequiturs, while explaining nothing whatsoever about the need for the lists in question, offer - some insight—however blurred — into Mr. Saxbe's mind. The picture that emerges is one of judgments formed of a jumble of stereo- types and ill.cligested myths. The discovery of Mr. Sax- be's lack of perception can come as no surprise. According to Shimon Ben Shemesh, this activity of the land reclamation and de- velopment agency is inde- pendent of any cabinet resolutions and is undertaken in the knowledge that some of the land could conceivably be returned to Jordan — or to Palestinians — in the framework of a final peace settlement. Asked what would happen in that eventuality, Ben She- mesh replied that "exchange bargains will then take place." He indicated that some of the Arab owners want to sell their land pre- cisely because they think it _ will be returned to them I I People say: If you lack knowledge, what have you •c- quired?
