Richard Grossman,
Champion. of Israel

LONDON (JTA) — The
death of Richard Crossman
deprives Israel of its most
consistent a n d articulate
friend in Britain. Mr. Cross-
man died last Friday at age
66.
At the time of his death,
he was engaged on a biogra-
phy of Dr. Chaim Weizmann
and had completed the first
draft. He came to Zionism in
a strange and unexpected
way. In 1945, as a young La-
bor member of Parliament,
he was appointed by Ernest
1 1P' as one of the three
members of the An-
glo-American Commission on
Palestine, in the anticipation
that he would take the Arab
side.
During the meetings of the
commission in Washington,
Mr. Crossman met with Da-
vid Horowitz, now emeritus
governor of the Bank of Is-
rael, then an official of the
Jewish Agency, and they had
a long conversation in a
cafe. From then on, Mr.
Crossman's views on the Mid-
dle East underwent a radical
change, and he became a
staunch supporter of Zionism,
and afterwards Israel.

It was he who drafted the
report of the commission,
which recommended the im-
mediate admission of 100,000
Jewish refugees to Palestine,
and stated that the Jewish
National Home was rooted in
the soil of Palestine, and
could not be abolished by the
decision of statesmen. The
Attlee government rejected
the report, and Crossman be-
came one of the most effec-
tive critics of its Middle East
policy.
After his first meeting with
Weizmamt, Mr. Crossman be-
came a close friend of the
Zionist le a der, and this
friendship continued until
Weizmann's death. He often
stayed with Weizmann at
Rehovot.
Mr. Crossman wrote a
book on the Palestine Corn-
mission, "Palestine Mission,"
a book on the Jewish state,
and innumerable articles and
essays on the place of Israel
in the world, and on its des-
tiny, as he saw it. As editor
of the New Statesman, he ex-
ercised a further beneficial
influence in the cause of
Israel.
He had a deep insight into
the predicament of Diaspora
Jews. It was he who once
said: "All the goyim are anti-
Semites. The experienced of
the Jews makes this inevit-
able. But some are open anti-
Semites, and some are sub-
conscious anti-Semites. The
subconscious ones cannot, of
course, be blamed."
Mr. Crossman was born in
1907, the son of a judge. He
was educated at Winchester
and Oxford. During his ca-
reer, he was an Oxford lec-
turer; deputy-director of psy-
chological warfare during the
war; member of Parliament
between 1945 and 1974; Lord
president of the council and
leader of the House of Com-
mons; and minister of social
security. (See Commentary,
Page 2).
