Pelavin, president of the Flint Jewish Community Council, and Hy Klein, chair- man of the Council's com- munity relations committee, called upon the ambassador and his government to ad- here to the Declaration of Human Rights, and in the name of humanity, "to pro- vide the Jews of Syria with the dignity deserved by any human being. We ask you to rescind the special laws for Jews, and to permit them their freedom and their right of emigration." The letter to the Syrian ambassador was sent in the wake of the recent murder of four Syrian Jewish women and the subsequent accusa- tion against two respected members of the Jewish com- munity. The letter goes on: "The reported arrest of the two men along with two Moslems for the dastardly murders is apparently a blood plot against an already- suffering Syrian Jewish corn_ munity." In the communique, Klein and Pelavin list the principal restrictions in force upon the Jewish community and add "It is inconceivable and un- palatable to believe the gov- ernmental fabrication of the charge of complicity in mur der against the two arrested Jews. Such an affront to the intelligence of the civilized world and to all concepts of justice and humanity could only have been contrived by a regime that has forfeited every claim to decency." The Flint Jewish Commu- nity Council is requesting everyone to protest the re- cent murders and jailings to tire Syrian president and the Syrian ambassador to the United Nations: President Hafez al Assad, Presidential Palace, Damas- cus, Syria; and Ambassador Haissam Kelani, Permanent Representative of the Syrian Arab Republic to the United Nations, 964 Third Ave., New York 10022. Copies of protest letters also should be sent to: Hon. Kurt Waldheim, United Nations General Secretary, UN Building, UN Plaza, New York 10017.
