Those who are religious are Orthodox, as Orthodoxy was the only tradition practiced in Mo- rocco. They are very attach. ed to Judaism. Despite what- ever feelings they have about the .way Moroccans are treated in Israel, they are very pro-Israel. They are at- tached to Israel and they rejoice that there is a state of Israel. Their first project is to raise funds for a youth center in the development town of Dimona. About one-third of the Moroccan Jewish community in the U.S. lived in Israel and nearly everyone has family in. the Jewish state. Their occupations here vary. Many have had to adapt, and even change their occupations. Many were in banking , in Morocco, as Sephardic Jews Were the bankers for much of the Middle East. A number of Moroccan Jews here are col- lege professors and bankers. But most are engaged in small retail store businesses; and interestingly, serve as women's hairdressers, an- other Moroccan Jewish occu- pation. Nearly everyone speaks French and the announce- ments • at socials are usually in French and English. There is a large group from Spanish Morocco which speaks Spanish. Moroccans came here be fore World War II. They emigrated to the U. S ; be- cause of the shadows of war covering Europe. However, the newcomers want to bring all Moroccan Jews together and to let the American Jew ish community know that they are here. They are trying to keep their Sephardic tradition.
