The programs also will al- low students to work closely with the Jewish aged to gain greater insight into their problems so that they, might be better- equipped for ca- reers in the rabbinate, edu- cation, rehabilitation and so- cial work. - The Brookdale gift allows $500,000 for the university's affiliated Rabbi Isaac El- chanan Theological Seminary and an equal Amount to Teachers Institute for Worn- en for scholarships and fel- lowships and t o w a r d s the introduction of the new pro- gra ms. At the seminary, a three- level "New Dimensions for the Aged" program is being effected to help future rabbis develop the necessary train- ing for working with the aged. A special service program also includes chaplaincy ac- tivities involving cultural, educational and religious ser_ vices at Jewish nursing insti- tutions. Four students have begun their internship at the instil tute, taking monthly "shifts" on a rotating basis. They conduct services at the insti- tute's synagogui Friday and Saturday, visit with patients and their families, offer spir- itual guidance and comfort and provide a sympathetic, sensitive response to t h e needs of the Jewish elderly and infirm. Rostow Named to Touro Law School Post NEW YORK—Dr. Eugene .V. Rostow, dean of the Yale Law School from 1955 to 1965, now Sterling Professor of Law and Public Affairs there, has been - appointed director of planning of the Touro School of Law, it was announced by Dr. Bernard Lander, president of Touro College, which will open its law school in September 1975. The new law- school, the first to be chartered in New York City in nearly 50 years, is also the first law school in the United States to be established under Jewish auspices. Dr. Rostow served from 1966 to 1969 as undersecre- tary of state for political affairs. Other positions he has held include adviser to the State Department. Dr. Rostow is recruiting the core faculty for the law school, directing the initial acquisition of 60,000 volumes for the law library, estab- lishing admissions criteria Boston Tay-Sachs Screenings Begun BOSTON (JTA) — A Tay- Sachs Prevention Program has been established to de- tect the incidence of Tay- Sachs disease among the Jewish population of Greater Boston, through the support of the Combined Jewish Phil- anthropies of Greater Boston. An advance of $30,000 from the Combined Jewish Phil- anthropies enabled the pro- gram to start quickly in the fall of 1973, and provided the stimulus for other founda- tions to give financial sup- port to the program. Two- major contributions have already been received from both a Jewish and a non-sectarian foundation. More than 1,700 - persons have been tested in the pro- gram's first three screenings, held in various -suburban Bos- ton communities. Results so far show a carrier rate of- about one in 30 among in- dividuals who had no prior knowledge of the disease in their families.
