`Mighty Pen'
Award Given
Meyer Levin

NEW YORK — Celebrating
his golden anniversary as a
writer this month, author
Meyer , Levin received "a
new weapon to use in his
literary battles,,," a pen in
the form of a; sword. The
pen-sword, inscribed "in
token of fifty years of dis-
tinguished writing in the
cause of truth," was the gift
of a group of major com-
munity organizations headed
by the Anti _ Defamation
League of Bnai Brith, at a
luncheon presided over by
Arnold Forster.
Levin promptly used the
"Pen Is Mightier Than The
Sword" device • to; cut the
golden anniversary cake,
formed like a typewriter,
with a candle for each key.
Levin's current book, "The
Obsession," has stirred up a
controversy over his charges
that an anti-Israel clique in
the literary world uses its
connections to denigrate
works that have a positive
Jewish viewpoint, such as his
own.
"The Obsession" points out
that certain left-wing intel-
lectuals dangerously down-
grade the _ Holocaust. This,
Levin said in his acceptance
speech, was the cause of his
20-year battle over the stage
version of "The Diary of
Anne Frank." For example,
Anne's statement, "Perhaps
through our Jewish suffering
the world will learn the
good," was generalized on'
Broadway as "all people
have suffered at one time or
another."
"First, as at Babi Yar,
the Jewish nature of the
Holocaust is denied," Levin
said, "next it is suggested
that there weren't 6,000,000
but maybe four. Then, two.
Finally, that the Jews did to
the Arabs worse than what
the Nazis did to the Jews."
This propaganda line, he
warned, prepares the world,
psychologically, for further
attacks on Jews, even an-
other Holocaust.
Joining the ADL in cele-
brating Levin's 50th writing
anniversary were the Union
of American Hebrew Congre-
gations (Reform), the Wom-
en's League for Conservative
Judaism, the Conference of
Christians 'and' Jews, the
ZiOnist Federation of Amer-
ica, the Writers and Artists
for peace in the Middle East
and the National Jewish Wel-
fare Board.

JWV Lauds Russian
for Return of Medals

WASHINGTON—The Jew-
ish War Veterans of the
U.S.A. applauded the actions
-of a retired, much decorated
Soviet army colonel, for re-
turning his medals and re-
nouncing his citizenship in
the Soviet Union in protest
of official refusals for a visa
to emigrate to Israel.
JWV was referring to
Naum M. Alshansky, retired
Soviet army colonel, who
was earlier stripped of his
rank and depriv ed of his of-
ficer's pension shortly after
he applied for permission to
leave for Israel in 1971. He
is one of several highly
decorated Soviet war heroes
denied the right to emigrate.
