In a short and informal ceremony held recently at Jerusalem's City Hall, "Sch- wester" (Sister) Selma Mayer of Shaare Zedek Hos- pital was awarded the Jeru- salem Medal by Mayor Teddy Kollek. Schwester S e 1 m e, who celebrated her 90th birth- day last week, was the first nurse in Israel and has been a celebrated figure to Jeru- salemites since her arrival in 1916. In his presentation of the medal, Mayor Kollek spoke of Schwester Selma's pio- neering role in the develop- ment of modern health ser- vices in Israel. She also was presented with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Shaare Zedek School of Nursing, which she founded in 1936 and guided for more than 20 years. Schwester Selma recalled her arrival at Shaare Zedek during World War I, in the midst of a typhoid epidemic when Jerusalem had no elec- tricity or piped water.
