He held the position of pro- fessor of economics and chairman of the department, a role he filled for some 30 years. He lectured at the Univer- sity of Michigan, at the na- tional convention of the American Economic Associ- ation, and gave the 100th anniversary lecture marking the birth of Justice Louis D. Brandeis. In 1936-39 Prof. Levin served as president of the Detroit Jewish Social Service Bureau. He was a member of the Board of United He- brew Schools, of the budget review committee of the Council of Social Agencies of Metropolitan Detroit, the board of the Jewish Voca- tional Service, and in 1958- 60 as president of the Jewish National Fund Council of Detroit. Prof. Levin's articles on education, labor, technology, population, and Jewish themes, have appeared in more than a dozen leading professional journals in this country and abroad. His name was chosen for the first 1942 edition of the Di- rectory of American Schol- ars, and has been included in subsequent editions. It has also appeared in the various editions of Who's Who in America and Who's Who in World Jewry. In 1958 there was estab- lished at Wayne State Uni- versity the Samuel M. Levin Economics Award. In recent years it has awarded a cash prize of $300 to an economics graduate or undergraduate student who wins out in an annual economics essay com- petition.
