History of Jews

JERUSALEM — "The Jew-
ish People in the First Cen-
tury," Volume I of a 12-vol-
ume series d e a l i n g with
Jewish-Christian rela tions
from the first century CE
to the present, was presented
to Hebrew University Presi-
dent Avraham Harman at a
ceremony attended by visit-
ing European scholars.
Prof. Shmuel Safrai, of the
university's department of
history and M. de Jonge of
Leyden are the co-editors of
the series. Profs. Safrai and
Menahem Stern, also of the
Hebrew University,. are the
editors of the first section
comprising t w o volumes;
several other Hebrew Uni-
versity scholars are the main
contributors to this first vol-
ume.

JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
Jewish National Fund is
ready to hand over to the
ministry of housing a tract of
200 dunams (50 acres) in the
Rafa region south of Gaza
which the JNF has now fully
prepared for settlement.
Upon this tract will arise
the first homes in the plan-
ned "Absalom" regional cen-
ter which is to serve the
kibutzim and settlements of
the region.
JNF chairman Jacob Tsur
re vealed that JNF was
making feasibility studies of
a scheme to lay a new road
from the Arava settlement of
Ein Yahav •to the central Ne-
gev settlements of Revivim
and Sde Boker. The road, if
laid, would greatly ease
transport problems from the
Arava to the center of the
country.
