Shapnell Autobiography Due

Nathan Shapell's autobi-
graphy, "Witness to the
ruth," will be published by
:avid McKay in April.

The story starts in 1939—
vhen he was 17 years of age
Ind living with his Polish
fewish family, when the
\Tazis invaded his hometown
)f Sosnowiec and the un-
)r eced ented persecution
tarted. During these years,
939 to 1945, over 125 of
3hapnell's immediate family
;e nd relations were killed dur-
g the reign of terror.

He is one of the few sur-
ivors from Auschwitz. Sub-
equer - ,, at the mere age

of 23, he became the leader
in 1945 of the community of
displaced Jews in the Ba-
varian community of Munch-
berg.
Shapell came to the United
States in 1951, and, after a
short period in Detroit, sub-
sequently settled in Cali-
fornia. He is currently chair-
man of the board of Shapell
Industries, Inc.
He is a member of the
state of California Commis-
sion on Government Organi-
zation and Economy, a trus-
tee of the City of Hope,
serves on the California At-
torney General's Advisory
Council, and the advisory
board of the Union Bank. His
special commitment is to the
youth of his community
through support of such or-
ganizations as Boy Scouts of
America and Little League.

The late Dr. Stephen S. Wise, whose 100th birthday
was marked with tributes to his memory in many com-
munities, took great pride in a special possession: he
possessed the signet ring which belonged to Theodor Herzl,
founder of the modern political Zionist movement and of
the World Zionist Congresses. After the historic Zionist
conference held in New York in May of 1942, Dr. Wise
presented the Herzl ring to Dr. Chaim Weizmann, as
shown in this photo.

Recently, considerable at-
tention was given to the 80th
birthday of Jack Benny.
Benny is notable for hold-
ing the all-time championship
for being 39 years old. He
was 39 for a longer period
than any man in history.
It's none of our business,
but we think 40 would have
been better. Take Rabbi
Akiba. He was a poor shep-
herd boy, completely un-
learned and began to go to
heder or school when he was
40 and he became one of the
towering figures of the Tal-
mud. Also, the Jews wan-
dered in the wilderness after
leaving Egypt for 40 years.
We think 40 would have
been better than 39, but as
Benny says, speaking of old
age, the age dbesn't matter.
Old age, he says, is a matter
of mind over matter and if
you don't mind, it doesn't
matter. Age is relative.

matics and audio-visual aids
to introduce children to Is-
rael will be sponsored by the
National Jewish Welfare

the American Zionist Youth

building a reputation that he
was stingy. He just fiddled
around as if he were stingy.
He realized that if you've got
the reputation, it didn't mat-
ter whether you had the real
article or not. So the theme
of almost all of the comedies
in which Jack Benny starred
was his abnormal stinginess.
It delighted people. They
had someone to laugh at.

Benny demonstrated that if
you just concentrate on build-
ing a reputation for stingi-
ness, your popularity will
grow by leaps and bounds.

But it was because the
Lord loved you, and would
keep. the oath that he swore
to your fathers, that the Lord
brought you out by a strong
hand, and rescued you from
a state of slavery, from the
power of Pharaoh, king of
Egypt.—Deut. 7:8.
