Socialist Delegation Pledges to Support Israel's Existence

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Mem-
bers of the Socialist Interna-
tional delegation gave as-
surances last weekend that
they support the existence of
Israel within secure borders
and "will never lend a hand
to any attempt to undermine
the existence of Israel in any
way or form."
The 13-member delegation,
headed by Austrian Chancel-
lor Bruno Kreisky, made
that statement on winding
up a four-day visit to Israel.
Despite its assurances to
Israel, the Socialist delega-
tion also was seeking ways
to improve economic coopera-
tion between Western Europe
and the Arab world.
Prior to their visit to Is-
rael, Dr. Kreisky held long
talks with Egyptian President
Anwar Sadat and with Yasir
Arafat, head of the Palestine
Liberation Organization.

He said later that a princ-
ipal purpose of the mission
was to find out whether the
Socialist International, repre-
senting 56 non-Communist
Socialist parties around the
world, should establish
"permanent contacts" with
political parties in the Arab
world..
Dr. Kreisky said he told
the Palestinians that the
member parties of the So-
cialist International w e r e
"loyal" to the Israeli Labor
Party as a member of the
international, but that they
recognized the political and
humanitarian problems of the
Palestinians.
Kreisky said on his arrival
here the mission was under-
taken because Europe is well
aware that its own peace and
security depends in large
measure on peace in the
Middle East.

During their stay, the dele-
gates representing labor and
socialist parties in European
countries, met with Premier
Golda Meir and other gov'ern-
ment leaders, with leaders
of the opposition Likud and
with representatives of the
Arab population in the ad-
ministered territories.
Addressing a dinner party
given in honor of the delega-
tion, Mrs. Meir said she was
encouraged by the message
her guests brought from
Egypt — namely that the
Egyptians admit they need
peace. "It is good to hear
that the Egyptians are now
comparing how much it costs
to kill an Israeli with how
much it costs to bring up an
Egyptian baby. When they
make this comparison, there
is hope," she said.
Kreisky disclosed that he
had been told by Egyptian

leaders that Egypt would
never sign a separate peace
with Israel. He said the
Egyptians had intimated that
an over-all settlement would
have to include all Arab
states though Egypt would
agree to sign some limited
accords with Israel.
During meetings with Pre-
mier Meir and other govern-
ment leaders, Kreisky report-
ed that he had made it clear
to his Arab hosts in Egypt
and Syria that Austria will
continue to facilitate the
transit of migrants, includ-
ing Jews, leaving the Soviet
Union for Israel.
At a dinner given by Mrs.
Meir for Dr. Kreisky, she
'praised him for setting up
alternate arrangements t o
continue the flow - of Soviet
Jews. She also assured Dr.
Kreisky and others on the
mission that she viewed their
fact-finding work more posi-
tively than she had in the
past.
Kreisky mixed pleasure
with business on the trip. He
saw his brother Shaul, 64,
for the first time in 36 years.
Shaul, who fled Austria in
1938 on an illegal passport,
said his brother helps him

were not reunited until last

Torahs Taken
From Church

Don't Throw
Them Away

NEW YORK (JTA)—With
a Torah procession Tuesday
from the building it has
shared with the Village Pres-
byterian Church since 1954,
the Brotherhood Synagogue
in Manhattan's Greenwich
Village ended a 19-year-old
partnership and found tem-
porary facilities with two
Orthodox congregations in
the Village.
Rabbi Irving J. Block, the
Reform rabbi of the liberal
600-m ember congregation,
said it had accepted offers
from Congregation Derech
Amun a and Congregation
Emunath Israel until it finds
a permanent home.
Starting Saturday, the con-
gregation will worship with
Emunath Israel members at
the regular Sabbath morning
services, followed by a kidush
by both congregations, Rabbi
Block said. Emunath Israel
is about 10 blacks away.
The rabbi said that both
congregations offered their
facilities without charge but
that the Brotherhood Congre-
gation would make a con-
tribution toward maintenance
costs to both congregations
for the four or five months
that it expects to share
facilities.
He said temporary offices
and classrooms have been
set up in rented quarters
near the Village.
