Fam- ilies were brought over here, and then, making use of the facilities of the IRO, were distributed throughout the country. Loans also were made to deserving local in- dividuals to enable them to bring their relatives to the United States. I was appointed as a steer- ing committee and helped to decide who should have prec- edence in getting loan s. Usually I favored those who could repay the loans the quickest since we were very eager to have rapid turnover. Like the traditional oil in the crust, it seemed that our funds were inexhaustible, for I can't recall any worthy case being refused due to lack of money. A great many of our most successful merchants received our assistance in bringing over their families. It is impossible to say how many people we brought to Detroit. The report for the . year 1912-13 showed that the industrial removal agent of the United Jewish Charities, Miriam Hart, handled 1,711 individuals through her de- partment. Twenty of these were cases that came from Galveston. Other years showed more or less the same number. I dare say there are only a few people in Detroit who know that we had an indus- trial removal department in the old Hannah Schloss be- cause practically no publicity was given to the work.
