facilities of the IRO, were
distributed throughout the
country. Loans also were
made to deserving local in-
dividuals to enable them to
bring their relatives to the
United States.
I was appointed as a steer-
ing committee and helped to
decide who should have prec-
edence in getting loan s.
Usually I favored those who
could repay the loans the
quickest since we were very
eager to have rapid turnover.
Like the traditional oil in the
crust, it seemed that our
funds were inexhaustible, for
I can't recall any worthy case
being refused due to lack of
money. A great many of our
most successful merchants
received our assistance in
bringing over their families.
It is impossible to say how
many people we brought to
Detroit. The report for the .
year 1912-13 showed that the
industrial removal agent of
the United Jewish Charities,
Miriam Hart, handled 1,711
individuals through her de-
partment. Twenty of these
were cases that came from
Galveston. Other years
showed more or less the same
number.
I dare say there are only
a few people in Detroit who
know that we had an indus-
trial removal department in
the old Hannah Schloss be-
cause practically no publicity
was given to the work. Most
