NEW YORK — At a time when most people are try- ing to make money despite layoffs and cutbacks, Abe Lebewohl set out to lose money as he celebrated the 20th anniversary of making money in his delicatessen._ Lebewohl, who opened his Second Avenue- Delicatessen in March 1954, rolled back the prices in his deli to what they were 20 years ago. To announce the special bargain, he took out newspaper ads. He also-hired a private guard in anticipation of crowds. The guard had trouble find- ing the deli. However, by the time he arrived there was a line down Second Avenue. Inside, chopped liver canapes were passed out free, and those who ordered $3 or more received a free salami. Prices were knocked back to 50 cents for a corned beef sandwich, 30 cents for matzo ball soup and a nickel for tea or coffee. Rabbi Stephen Lerner, of nearby Tifereth Israel-Town and Village Syn- agogue, said "The Talmud says you have to have a just price. This price is too low to be just." To add to the commotion, the Messengers — a hasidic duo of electric organ and drums — arrived. Although he had not placeto put them, Lebewohl was told to "sus- pend them from the ceiling like a go-go act." Mehdi Fined; Says `No Justice in N.Y. NEW YORK—For his role .in a City Hall demonstration during the Yom Kippur War, Dr. M. T. Mehdi, secretary- general of the Action Com- mittee on American"- Arab Relations, was fined $250 in Manhattan Criminal Court March 6. Dr. Mehdi said he will ap- peal to a higher court. "For an Arab in New York City to find justice is next to im- possible," he said. "On the lower level of courts we are found guilty. On the higher levels the case is dismissed. We are optimistic this will be dismissed, too." Judge Arthur Goldberg im- posed the sentence on-Mehdi and another demonstrator, Elayan Diab Ali Tayeh, found guilty by a jury of resisting arrest, harassment and dis- orderly conduct during dem- onstrations by pro-Arab and pro-Israeli groups. Israel Names Full Envoy to S. Africa JERUSALEM (JTA) — Is- rael is to have a full am- bassador in South Africa in- stead of a charge d'affaires only as before. The present charge d'affaires, Michael Michael, who has the per- sonal rank of ambassador, will return home in May to be replaced by Yitzhak Unna, who will be the first full ambassador. Unna served for five years in South Africa as consul general in Johannesburg till last year. South Africa has a consul general in Tel Aviv and his rank is also expected to be elevated. Officials here preferred to refer to the new arrange- ment as a "normalization" and sought to avoid over- publicizing it.
