Creative Party Planning including Candy Centerpieces be justified—all of you were for the survival of Judaism, but only two voted against intermarriage? PINCHAS: Although intel- lectually I know that inter- marriage threatents Jewish survival, emotionally it is hard to accept being against it. Who can say whether or not I might meet a gentile girl, fall in love and get mar- ried? I also said that I thought Judaism should survive—but I don't know if I could really tell you why. I know that cer- tain institutions such as ex- ploitation and slavery have no right to exist. So as a Jew it is not enough to say that Judaism should survive because we are Jew- ish. I think that there has to be some sort of moral, cul- tural justification. YEHUDAH: In my opin- ion, the justification for be- ing Jewish is not anti-Semit- ism and not because it is something natural to us. The justification for being Jewish is constant study of your J u d a i s m. It is not N : , g ,....: 11( outh env „.. :., The seventh annual Jewish Community Council-Walter E. MEIR: I think that what- ever faults may exist in the education of the Zionist youth movements, they provide a very important element of character education: Jewish Pride. We are not only Jew- ish by birth, but also out of consciousness. The Zionist youth move- ments strengthen the ties of young Jews with the Jewish Nation and with the place where the rebirth of our people is taking place, Israel. Perhaps it is fitting to add that at the end of our sikha a short goodby party was held for two members of the kvutza (group) who are go- ing to Israel. MEIR: Do you really feel that the overwhelming ma- jority of you would not deny your Jewishness in the face of persecution? MIKE: I was the one who answered yes to the last question. My Jewishness is something internal and is not strengthened by outside as- sertiveness. I am not the type that walks around with a giant 'Jewish star around my neck shouting: "I am a Jew!" The Jews have survived 2,000 years of Galut (Diaspo- ra) by internal willpower and preservation of tradi- tions, not by asserting our power.
