progressive topics, according
to Dr. Richard Reuss, former
professor of f o l k l o r e in
Wayne State University's de-
partment of anthropology.
In 1940, Guthrie moved to
New York, became a mem-
ber of its progressive sub-
culture and formed more
Jewish friendships; He met
Moses Asch, who recorded
Guthrie for various small
record companies and later
became an executive of Folk-
ways Records. While in New
York, Guthrie met his sec-
ond wife, Marjorie Green-
blatt Mazia, a Jewish dancer
in Martha Graham's troupe.
Guthrie and Mrs. Mazia
were married in 1945 and had
four children, one of whom,
Arlo, is a rock and roll art-
ist. The Guthrie household
was not religious, but Jewish
tradition was introduced into
the house t h r o u-g h Mrs.
Guthrie's family and friends.
Her mother, Aliza Green-
blatt, a Yiddish-poetess now
in her 80s, was deeply re-
spected by Guthrie for the
culture she represented, Dr.
Reuss said. Guthrie even
wrote a couple of children's
Hanuka songs.
,-Arlo became Bar Mitzva
while raised by his mother
long after his parents' di-
vorce in the early 1950s. A
recent New York Times
article reported that Arlo had
taken Hebrew lessons from
Rabbi Meir Kahane.
Boy Dylan, folk-rock hero
of the 1960s, currently on his
first concert tour of the U.S.
in six years, was a disciple
of the late Woody Guthrie.

To do so meant the popular
actress had to delay a long-
time dream: to play Chek-
hov. When she returns she
will begin rehearsals for the
role of Nina in "The Sea-
gull." She recently was in-
vited to the' Soviet Union and
while there observed Russian
theater.
Miss Almagor was runner-
up for the title of best actress
in the 1969 Cannes Film
Festival and is married to
film producer Jacob Agmon,
in whose movies she often
stars.
One of them, due for re-
lease shortly in the U.S., is
"Siege," in which she por-
trays a widow of the Six-
Day War. Another, bought
by MGM for distribution
here, is "Highway Queen,"
in which she plays a young
mother. •
The third, "The House on
Shloush Street," which is in
Tel Aviv, has her taking the
role of an older woman.

"It is the responsibility of
every Jew who feels a spiri-
tual kinship to the Jewish
people, to the prophets of Is-
rael, to the Bible, to the re-
born homeland, and to the
Jewish state, to learn He-
brew, the key to the knowl-
edge of Judaism." — David
Ben-Gurion.
