Olympic Chief: THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Friday, March 1, '1974-23
No Way to Stop Pesah Tour Set to St. Thomas
NEW YORK — A group ing islands, and a visit to
2nd Massacre
the St. Thomas Synagogue,

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Lord Michael J. Killanin,
president of the International
Olympic Committee, said he
is unable to guarantee that
the 1972 Munich massacre
could not be repeated at the
1976 Olympic Games in Mon-
treal.
Asked on the ABC-TV "Is-
sues and Answers" program
Sunday what steps his com-
mittee can take to insure
that the 1976 Olympics do
not become another Munich,
Lord Killanin replied, "Let's
absolutely face the facts of
life. If someone wants to
murder somebody and they
have planned it, it is jolly
hard to stop it."
He was referring to the
murder by Arab terrorists
of 11 members of the Israeli
team--in the Munich Olympic
Village and at a military
airport. near Munich in Sep-
tember 1972.
Lord Killanin also said his
committee was "still inquir-
ing" into the beatings of
Russian Jews, demonstra-
tions against the Israeli
team, and the barring of Is-
raeli iournalists from the In-
ternational University Games
in Moscow. an event that
took place eight months ago.
He implied in his answers
to reporters' questions that
the incidents may have been
"exaggerated" and that some
of the journalists may not
have been bona fide media
men.
Referring to the events in
Munich, Lord Killanin said.
"Quite naturally, as a result
of the Munich experience,
the greatest steps will be
taken to insure the control of
entering the village and the
sports grounds."

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Unless
the detente between the So-
viet Union and the United
States is maintained, there is
a danger that no settlement
will be reached in the Middle
East and this means a possi-
bility of a renewed war, Dr.
Nahum Goldmann, president
of the World Jewish Con-
gress said at a luncheon
meeting with Israeli editors
and WJC leaders.
According to Dr. Goldmann
the present situation offers
the first real possibilities for
reaching an arrangement —
temporary or permanent —
with the Arabs, conditioned
by the international situation.
He said that both the U. S.
and USSR are interested—far
separate reasons — in main-
taining the detente they have
reached.
Dr. Goldmann said the
WJC plenary assembly will
meet for the first time in six
years in the Hague at the
end of April.
...He announced the estab-
lishment of a special depart-
ment at the WJC dealing with
the "Third World." This, he
said, was especially import-
ant now that relations be-
tween Israel and Third World
nations have cooled down or
have been ruptured. Some
500 delegates from 64 coun-
tries will attend the assem-
bly.

totaling 600 persons will visit
St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Is-
lands for the Passover holi-
days and will completely oc-
cupy the new Sapphire Hill
and Beach Resort during
their 11-day stay.
Jesse Plaxen, president of
Traditional Travel, the tour
planner, announces for the
first time in the Caribbean,
hotel facilities will be strictly
kosher.
A kosher caterer will be
flown down to the islands
and will be in charge of all
food preparation and produc-
tion. All foods will be fresh-
ly cooked and prepared on
the prernises.
Daily services will be held
on the premises, as well as
two seders to which the local
Jewish community will be
invited.
Other features of the Pass-
over tour to St. Thomas in-
clude lectures, movies, fash-
ion shows, tennis, fishing,
free snorkeling lessons, bingo-
cruises in Virgin Islands
waters aboard luxury yachts,
day excursions to neighbor-

which is the second oldest
synagogue in the Western
Hemisphere.
Broadway and Israeli
talent will be brought to the
island to perform.
