18—Friday, March 1, 1974 55 Undergraduates NEW YORK — A group of 55 Yeshiva University under- graduates will leave for Is- rael soon to study at Israeli schools and to work on kibut- zim drained of manpower due to the Yom Kippur War. Thirty-two students, from Stern College for Women, THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS Stephen Wise Recalled as AJCongress Leader BY BORIS SMOLAR to Study in Israel (Copyright 1974, JTA, Inc.) Teachers Institute for Worn- en, Yeshiva College, Erna Michael College of Hebraic Studies and James Striar School of General Jewish Studies, are part of a city- wide volunteer effort being coordinated by a number of Jewish youth organizations. The American Jewish Con- gress is the creation of the democratic masses of • East European Jewish immigrants in this country, led by the late eminent leader Dr. Stephen S. Wise. Although not a native of Eastern Europe, Rabbi Wise wilimmilimmillimmilliummilimmummulimmimmilimmilmillimilmul — a towering figure on the American scene — was, how- HAPPY _--- ever, a nationalist Jew. He was a ,great liberal who un- derstood the feelings of Jew- ish nationalism among the immigrants. The mass of im- migrant Jews then consti- ANNIVERSARY _- tuted a great majority in American Jewry, and they considered the American from your Jewish Committee as an or- . ganization- of "Yahudim" Loving Children and Grandchildren — _ of German Jews — inclined I Frank, Rita, Steven, Carol, Sanford & Cindy._ toward assimilation -rathe'r immilmmullImIIIIIHNIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIiimiummilifilmulmmlummum than toward Jewish national- ism. Dc. Wise, although a Re- form rabbi, also did not see eye-to-eye with the leaders of the American Jewish Com- mittee, which was composed of a small group of wealthy a n d influential individuals w h o considered themselves qualified to be the spokesmen for American Jewry and the guardians of the rights of the Jews everywhere. These well- meaning notables, though dedicated Jews and of great leadership ability, were far from understanding the men- tality of the Jewish immi- grant masses. Thus, two types of Jews with two different views on Jewish life developed: one was the American-rooted type of the so-called "Yahu- dim" and the other was the immigrant t y p e_ of New York's Lower East Side. The JERRY SINGER first sought to "patronize" the second, but the latter did not want to be "patronized." He sought to organize a rep- resentative of his own, elected in a democratic way. Time mar ches on and brings changes wit it. The years immediately after World War II have seen a great many changes in American Jewish life, includ- ing changes in the relations between the two Jewish or- ganizations and their philoso- phies. Rosedale Oldsmobile 17411 Grand River, Detroit 2 Blocks E. of Southfield X-Way 272-6212 - • has changed itself from a small group of notables into a membership organization with branches in all larger Jewish communities. From a non-Zionist body it became a strongly pro-Israel organi- zation. Instead of pursuing an "Americanization" policy, it started to pursue a policy of strengthening Jewish iden- tity. The former snobbish and benevolent attitude to- ward immigrant Jews has melted away. Today the leaders of the American Jewish Congress and the American Jewish Committee sit around the same table at the National Jewish Community Relations Advisory Council which co- ordinates the programs of the organizations engaged in community relations. Each of the two has its own field of work. The American Jew- ish Committee has greater funds and, therefore, a wider program of activities. But the American Jewish Congress has practically a monopoly on the American scene in pro- viding technical ; legal and legislative services to the communities on such matters as eliminating discrimination in employment, education, housing and the like by legal actions to enforce laws bar- ring discrimination. The present membership of the American Jewish Con- gress hardly remembers the originators of the organiza- tion except Dr. Stephen Wise, who left his mark in Ameri- can Jewish history in general. The younger generation of members also knows of the leadership of the late Louis Lipsky. But few of them re- member — or even know — the names of Jitseph Baron- dess, Dr. Nahum Syrkin, Zvi Masliansky, Baruch Zucker- man, Gedaliah Bublick, Ber nard Richards and others who played a very important role in the creation of the American Jewish Congress. The president of the Amer- ican Jewish Congress today is Rabbi Arthur Hertzberg, a scholarly and energetic man steeped ,in Jewish lethming, deeply interested in all as- pects of Jewish life, author of important books, professor of history at Columbia Uni- versity, member of the board of governors of the Jewish Revisionist Co-Founder Von Weisel, 78 TEL AVIV (JTA) — Dr. Wolfgang Von Weisel, writer, doctor and co-founder of the Zionist Revisionist movement, died Feb. 21 at age 78. Born in Vienna, where his father was an officer of the Austro-Hungarian Army, he himself served in and was wounded in World War I. He came to Palestine in - 1922 and was an instructor in the early Hagana officers' train- ing school in 1924. Dr. Von Weisel was a pro- lific writer for foreign and Hebrew newspapers, includ- ing the now defunct Israeli daily, Haboker. He was a disciple of Vlad- imir Jabotinsky, and , when the latter defected from the World Zionist Organization, helped found the Zionist- Revisionists, predecessor of the present-day Herut Party. Dr. Von Weisel retired from political activities when the Israeli state was founded and served during the 1948 War for Independence as an artillery officer. During the latter years of his life he directed a hospital for the chronically ill in Gedera.
