Israel's President on Jews and Genes

President Ephraim Katzir of Israel

At a conference with American Jewish correspondents,
in his home in Jerusalem, President Ephraim Katzir of
Israel was asked for his opinion regarding C. P. Snow's
view that Jews are genetically more intelligent than other
people. The following is his reply from the transcript that
reached The Jewish News this week:

There is another problem
which is more or less a
moral problem: are there any
scientific problems that the
human race is not allowed
to study? My feeling as a
scientist is that a scientist
should be allowed to study
any problem applying a
strict, scientific method. If
you want to apply the infor-
mation, this is, in many
cases, a social problem and
society should decide whether
the information that you have
acquired should be allowed
to be used or not.
A scientist is allowed to
study nuclear fission and he
should go ahead and study
whatever he wants, but
whether somebody should
have the permission to throw
atomic bombs, this is a moral
social question and it is not
the question of the scientist.

Immigrant's Heirs

TUCSON — A considerable
"orphan fortune" awaits
heirs of a family of Jewish
ancestry which came from
Vilna, Lithuania about the
turn of the century, accord-
ing to Gordon L. Cox, pro-
bate genealogist.
Cox, 302 West Elm, Tucson,
specializes in tracing missing
relatives to settle estates. He
took over the search with
only early 20th Century clues
to guide him.
He said a certain Isak
Joffe married Blume Schuk-
ster in Vilna, about 1900.
"At least, one of their chil-
dren, if not two, died with
their mother in the Holo-
caust," Cox continued, "and
our task is finding anyone in
the United States, or else-
where, who can trace their
relationship to Isak Joffe or
to Blume Schukster."
Before World War II, Joffe
traveled from Vilna to Fin-
land, where he did some
Jewish study. Subsequently,
he went to London, and spent
most of the war years there.
Thereafter, he journeyed to
Salt Lake City, then to the
eastern United States, to
Texas, Kansas and finally
Canada.
Cox said Joffe was widely
respected as a member of
each of the communities
where he lived. However,
family records are either de-
stroyed or inaccessible.
Cox said he is searching
for people who may have
known members of the Isak
Joffe family or their rela-
tives, and can give informa-
tion concerning their where-
abouts.

Because we're not
a tourist bureau, we won't
hand you a tourist brochure

We don't have to convince you to visit Israel. The climate is good, the
beaches are beautiful, and it offers more than the usual share of tourist
attractions.
But that's not why you go to Israel. You go because of what Israel
means to you, how it makes you feel. Jerusalem isn't just another city,
Masada isn't just another mountain, and the Western Wall is more than
just a great archeological find.
So if Israel is a special place for you, she doesn't want you to just come
and visit, she wants you to come and stay.
We know it's a big decision to make—going on Aliyah. You have doubts
and fears, and you want to know what you're really going to be up against.
That's our job. We tell you what to expect of life in Israel. The joys and
the problems. Especially the problems. Not only because you should
know about them, but because if you do, that alone makes things easier.
And that's also our job, to make things easier for you.
We're the Israel Aliyah Center. We offer information, personal coun-
selling, and assistance to American and Canadian Jews who are thinking
about living, working, or studying in Israel.
And we've also got plenty of brochures.
