praise for the American role
in relation to Israel, he said:
"I have not words enough to
praise Kissinger." He com-
mented that Kissinger "has
never cheated us," that he
has befriended the Arabs
"and we have nothing against
that." He said that he was
optimistic about the disen-
gagement. In the near future,
he said, he foresaw "an im-
portant opportunity for a set-
ment with the Arabs."
Resolution of the crisis

NRP Knesseters seemed
sad and bewildered when I
they heard the news. This
was . certainly not what they
had intended, they freely
admitted.
By a strange quirk, their
anger and annoyance were
now directed against Dr.

opinion in view of the ex-

"Who Is a Jew" and of the
unanimous feelings among

firm for legal amendment.
Formation of the minority
government forestalled ef-

forts made by the opposition
leader, Menahem Begin, to
form a National Unity Gov-
ernment.
The conflict with the NRP
had another aspect: Mapam
might not have backed the
Labor Aligntnent if Mrs.
Meir had yielded to the de-
mands of the religious par-
ties. Also, members of the
Independent Liberal Party
were adamant against the
NRP pressures.
Mrs. Meir had been prom-
ised the support of the three
Knesseters of the newly-
formed Civil Rights Party
headed by Shulamit Aloni. In
a showdown, especially on
the question of pending nego-
tiations with the Arabs, the
new government might thus
secure a bare majority in
the Knesset.

It has often been a point
of confusion to believe that
the biblical Mount Sinai is
actually a known location. In
fact, there is no Jewish tra-

it seems that the exact loca-

Sinai Value Beyond Military

From the
Encyclopedia Judaica
Economically, the Sinai
Peninsula must rank among
the world's most unimportant
areas. It contains scant raw
materials and agricultural
production is difficult.
Geographically, it is a buf-
fer between Egypt and Is-
rael, but the number of miles
between the two countries is
minute when measured by
the speed of modern missiles
and jets.
