Mrs. B. Benedict Glaser, chairman, noted that young people are finding it increas- ingly difficult to obtain gov- ernment, bank and school loans. However, organizations such as NCJW are trying to fill some of the need. T h e education assistance committee has 210 active cases on its books. In 1973, the committee helped 40 students through NCJW allocations to the Ed- ucation Assistance Fund, in honor of Ida E. Ginsburg, past Detroit council presi- dent, and from tributes to our other memorial scholar- ship funds. The latter are named for Henry and Gussie Freund, John, Ella and Stan- ley Imerman, Vera Parshall Shiffman, Charles F. Rosen, Elsa F. Welling and NCJW Perpetual Memorial Fund. They have aided students in every field, and the loan repayment is not required until they have completed their education and ha v e established themselves. Co-chairman of the educa- tion assistance committee is Mrs. Joseph Garlock; record- ing secretary, Mrs. Howard B. Appelman; and adviser, Mrs. Sol C. Grossman. JERUSALEM—The Edison Cinema, the city's oldest movie house, was closed in- definitely due to damage caused by 500 karate film fans who went wild after the film was switched for a chil- dren's movie. The film, "The Steel Fin- ger," produced in Hong Kong by the late American-born star, Bruce Lee, was re- placed by a special Sabbath eve matinee screening for children. The management said that the audience demanded a switch back to the original film, and when the manage- ment refused to comply, they tore up the screen, broke windows and smashed chairs.
