Bar-Ilan U. Researches Effects
of Faith, Science on Each Other

RAMAT-GAN -- Science in
the service of religion and
religion as an aid to science
is dealt with in more than
500 research projects being
undertaken by faculty and
students of Bar-Ilan, Israel's
only religious-oriented uni-
versity, outside Tel-Aviv.
Details on the projects are
contained in a special book
just published by the univer-
sity, summarizing four years
of scholastic activity through
the medium of doctoral
theses, research projects,
publishing and development
of patents for science-based
industries.
In addition to the 500 re-
search projects mentioned
above, the university's peda-
gogical staff of some 800
teachers and assistants has
published almost 2,000 books,
paiiiphlets and special stu-
dies.
While religious - oriented
subjects play an important
part in the university's re-
search activities, the natur-
al sciences predominate,
comprising about half of all
the projects. The rest is di-
vided evenly between Jewish
studies and the social sci-
ences.
Because of the university's
religious orientation, how-
ever, the scientific and social
studies frequently contain a
religious orientation. Among
the studies in the field of so-
cial sciences are religious
practices of Soviet immi-
grants to Israel and the
changes wrought by Israel
on them and a study of re-
ligious socialist movements.
In the field of natural
sciences research, the life
sciences take first place with
more than 125 studies com-
pleted or in the works and
530 books and pamphlets
published by the teaching
staff.
These include many studies
of special applicability to Is-
rael's needs, among them the
adaptation of waste material
from a yeast plant for mak-
ing high vitamin feed supple-
ments; the irrigation of pas-

ture grass in sand dunes with
brackish water; and the use
of certain waste waters for
irrigating plants.
Science has also been ap-
plied to religious studies by
devising methods to compu-
terize the Hebrew Responsa
literature. Experiments have

been conducted to create a
complete thesaurus of the He-
brew language by computer.
The university has estab-
lished a committee for sci-
ence-based industries which
has been instrumental, among
other activities, in develop-
ing several important pat-
ents.

Israelis Cheated
in Oil Deliveries

BEE KALT TRAVEL SERVICE

JERUSALEM (JTA)—Po-
lice arrested five fuel oil de-
livery men in connection with
widespread complaints of
short deliveries.
A police spokesman said
the investigation was just
starting and that more ar-
rests were expected.
The public outcry against
cheating by delivery men who
bring _fuel oil to centrally
heated apartment buildings
has been growing.
Scores of complaints have
been filed with the police and
with the oil companies accus-
ing delivery men of withhold-
ing as much as one-third of
the fuel charged for. At cur-
rent prices, this can run into
hundreds of pounds.
Police said a favorite cheat-
ing device was to pump air
into the consumer's tank
while the gauge -on the fuel
truck registered the delivery
of oil.
The growing incidence of
cheating is believed to stem
from the amalgamation of
the three main oil companies
during the Yom Kippur War.
