WASHINGTON (JTA) — A rumor that Jewish organiza- tions may be seeking to pre- vent the re-election of Sen. J. William Fulbright (D. Ark.) to a sixth term in No- vember was denounced by organization leaders as "ab- solutely untrue." They emphasized that Ful- bright's political future is a decision of voters in Ar- kansas. Herman Edelsberg, direc- tor of the Bnai Brith Inter- national Council, said: "Jew- ish organizations disagree with Sen. Fulbright's inter- pretation of America's na- tional interests in Middle East affairs. We are con- vinced that he tilts sharply to the Arab side. But none of the organizations is inter- fering in any way in the Arkansas state election be- cause they believe that judg- ment on the relative merits of Sen. Fulbright and his op- ponents is something that the voters of Arkansas must make for themselves." Fulbright, long severely critical of Zionism and U. S. governmental aid to Israel, said only two weeks ago on a television program that Zionists are trying to oust him from the Senate where he has served 30 years. Some listeners felt his re- mark was to provoke attacks on him from Jewish leaders which his backers could then flaunt to traditionally anti- Semitic extremists as proof of Jewish animosity towards him. The rumor may have stemmed from a news report Jan. 27 in the Memphis Commercial Appeal by John Bennet of its bureau in Little Rock. Bennet reported that former two-term Arkansas Gov. Sid- ney McMath had talked with "a long-time Jewish friend" whom Bennet said he identi- fied as Irving M. Engel, about raising Jewish cam- paign funds for Arkansas Gov. Dale Bumpers for a race against Fulbright. Engel, a former president of the American Jewish Committee, and currently honorary president and board of governor's member, prac- ticed law in Alabama and is a friend of many southern political leaders. According to the Com- mercial Appeal, McMath is considering opposing Ful- bright for the Senate seat. Lincoln's name brings memories of the R u s s ian- Jewish Hertz family. Hertz managed to eke out a living. He had two sons, Emmanuel or Mannie, and Joe, and they were his chief concern. Emmanuel managed to get enough money to take him to college and he became a lawyer. He had a hobby: Abraham Lincoln. He did much to research and disclose unknown facts about Lincoln. His writings did not achieve the fame of a Herndon, who knew Lincoln personally, or even of Carl Sandburg, but he became recognized as one of the country's authorities on Lincolnia. No one researched the life of Emmanuel Hertz as closely as Hertz researched Lincoln's, but I came across an interesting story. Emmanuel Hertz used to THERE IS A PLACE FOR YOU IN ISRAEL come down rower Fourth Ave. in New York, the sec- ond-hand book section of the city and buy books in quanti- ties and ship them to Ken tucky. He could not forget the humble town in Kentucky in which Lincoln was born and he set himself the ob- jective of establishing per- sonally libraries in two small Kentucky villages which had no. libraries. Lincoln walked 30 miles for a book! Emmanuel Hertz made it unnecessary in two places for future Lincolns to walk that much for a book! The story was told to me by one of the dealers Em- manuel Hertz used to visit every week or so. Now about Hertz's sec- ond son, Joe? Hertz was very disturbed about Joe's future. He came to R a b b i Aaron Wise lamenting. "I don't know what to do. Should he study law or medi- cine or something else. Even if I did know, what could I do? Where am I going to get the money to send him to college?" "Make him a rabbi," ad- vised Rabbi Aaron Wise. "Send him to a rabbinical college. I am sure they will give him a scholarship and that will take care of his college tuition." So Joe went to a rabbinical school. You must have heard of the late Chief Rabbi of the Brit- ish Empire, Joseph Herman Hertz!
