Menahem Begin—Opposition Leader Emerges as Folk Hero

By PHILIP SLOMOVITZ
JERUSALEM — Not only
because he was the hero of
the December Israel parlia-
mentary election and that he
is now the leader of the op-
position in the Knesset, but
because of his skill as a
speaker, debater, historian
and revolutionary, Menahern.
Begin is unquestionably one
of Israel's most distinguished
personalities. He is a folk
hero with many.
A serious man, often bitter
in Knesset debates, he never-
theless has a good sense of
humor. (A favorite anecdote
of his is included in the
ndup of Israel humor in
story commencing on
page one in this issue.)
Begin believes that 97 per
cent of the Knesset member-
ship opposes "total withdraw-
al which may ruin the very
existence of Israel." He is
battling against what he calls
"the repartitioning of Israel,"
as he describes the (Yigal)
Allon Plan. His chief targets
appear to be Allon and Abba
Eban.
His battle is for a National
Unity Cabinet in which he
would undoubtedly have a
seat, and he has "faith in the
eternal existence of Israel."
It is worth comparing
views: Joseph Almogi, ques-
tioned as to whether hope
should be retained in Israel's
survival said "not hope: we
have confidence." President
Ephraim Katzir emphasized
his faith in Israel's existence
and survival.
On this score, another
point is worth emphasizing:
Apparently taking a page
out of American blacks' les-
sons, the slogan "We shall
overcome: has come into use.
Begin, Katzir and Almogi
used it.
Begin shares a belief in
the miracles that saved Is-
rael. He defines the miracle

Torczyner to
Top U.S. Post

NEW YORK (JTA)—Jac-
ques Torczyner of the World
Zionist Organization Execu-
tive, past president of the
Zionist Organization of Amer-
ica, was elected chairman of
the American Section of the
World Jewish Congress here.
He succeeded Rabbi Joseph
Karasick.
In an acceptance state:
ment, Torczyner urged "uni-
ty of purpose and action"
within the WJCongress' tra-
ditional framework of divers-
ity.
His opponents, in what in-
siders described as a hotly
contested election character.
ized by bitter behind-the-
?nes maneuvering, were
bbi Wolfe Kelman, execu-
tive vice-president of the Rab-
binical Assembly, and Jacob
Katzman, executive vice-
president of the Labor Zion-
ist Alliance. Rabbi Kelman
dropped out of the race be-
fore the balloting.
Torczyner said after his
election, "This is a time
when Jewish leaders from all
parts of the Jewish spectrum
have to sit down together,
take counsel together, and
find within their diversity the
unity of purpose and of ac-
tion that are indispensable if
we are to produce the re-
sponse that the challenge be-
fore us demands. Without in-
sisting on uniformity, with-
out trying to discredit or si-
lence those whose views dif-
fer from ours, we must strive
to preserve the unity of the
community."

as defined by his people "not
in mystical but in practical
terms."
The revolt against the gov-
ernment is real, but the Is-
raelis are awaiting the result
of the findings being probed
by an inquiry commission.
Nevertheless, the condem-

nations of the errors that
may have led to the Yom
Kippur War are not limited
to Menahem Begin. When an
army reserve officer picketed
the prime minister's office
on what he described as "a
call of my conscience," he
was applauded and a passer-

by expressed the views cf
many spectators when he
said to the picketing lieuten-
ant: "Kol Hakavod!"—"Hats
off to you!"
General Arik Sharon, now
a member of Begin's opposi-
tion ranks in the Knesset, has
