AFL-CIO Envoys Pledge Support C'
for Israel to Prime Minister Meir

JERUSALEM—Prime Min-
ister Golda Meir, who spent
two hours with a top-level
delegation of the AFL-CIO on
the last day of the group's
week-long goodwill visit to
Israel, thanked the Ameri-
can labor movement for its
"staunch friendship with Is-
rael" since the outbreak of
the Yom Kippur War.
secretary-trea-
AFL-CIO
surer Lane Kirkland, head of
the five-man delegation, as-
sured the prime minister
that "We will back Israel, in
whatever course you may
decide."
"Your fight is our fight and
was a central issue at our
recent convention. For us,
Israel is an example that de-
fense and progress can go on
together," Kirkland said.
The lengthy audience with
Mrs. Meir testified to the
close ties American labor has
with Israel, particularly with
Histadrut. It was at the in-
vitation of Histadrut that
AFL-CIO President George
Meany had sent the mission
to make a first-hand survey
of Israel's situation and
needs. The labor leaders also
were received by President
Ephraim Katzir.
Prior to their departure,
the AFL-CIO delegation is-
sued a joint statement with
Histadrut, emphasizing the
need for secure and defens-
ible borders for Israel and
for political, military and ec-
onomic support. The Ameri-
cans expressed disappoint-
ment that European trade
unions had "let Israel down".
The itinerary of the delega-
tion was launched with a re-
ception and discussion at His-
tadrut headquarters in Tel
Aviv. Acting Secretary-Gen-
eral Yerucham Meshel wel-
comed them to the country,
stating that they would see
