Ford Speech Writer

Sadat Ousts Al Ahram's Heikal

WASHINGTON (JTA) —
Milton Friedman, for 25
years the chief of the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency's Wash-
ington Bureau, has been
hired by Vice President Ger-
ald Ford as a speech writer.
Friedman who retired from
the JTA several years ago,
served as press secretary to
Sen. Jacob K. Javits (R.,
N.Y.) in 1972.

close to Heikal, is expected
to see his ouster as a further
betrayal by Sadat of the Nas-
serist cause. But, King Fai-
sal of Saudi Arabia, a long-
time foe of Heikal, is ex-
pected to welcome the move,
having become Sadat's new
ally.
Heikal, who became editor
of the paper in 1959, shrewdly
built around it a publishing
empire. Al Ahram publishes
books and magazines and is
the largest distributor of
printed material in Egypt.
The company imports some
commercial goods for retail
sales.
Heikal will be replaced as
editor by Ali Amin, an exile
whose brother, Mustaf, was
jailed in 1965 as an alleged
Central Intelligence Agency
spy. Both brothers, who had
long poems of praise for Sa-
dat printed in the Cairo

may have been culminated
by a recent column in which
Heikal attacked the warm re-

NEW YORK (JTA)—Pad-
dy Chayefsky has demanded
the withdrawal of all of his
plays scheduled for televi-
sion production in France
because of "the behavior of
the French government dur-
ing the recent Middle East
war."
The famed playwright de-
clared: "The picture of
France on its knees grovel-
ing before the Arab oil-pro-
ducing countries has aroused
in me so profound a con-
tempt for France that I no
longer wish to have any of
my works done in that coun-
try."
Chayefsky's demand w as
addressed to Emilio Bruzzo,
producer - director of the
scheduled Chayefsky produc-
tions in Paris. It was con-
veyed to French news media

Chayefsky said in his state-
ment that while he under-
stood and sympathized with
the oil crisis being endured
by European countries and
Japan, "France alone has
flaunted its humiliation and
has gone out of its way to
fawn for favor from the oil-
producing countries."

Banker Rockefeller
to Meet Mrs. Meir

TEL AVIV (JTA)—Chair-
man of the Chase Manhattan
Bank, David Rockefeller, has
arrived in Israel "as a bank-
er" for a two-day visit during
which he will meet with Pre-
mier Golda Meir, Finance
Minister Pinhas Sapir, De-
fense Minister Moshe Dayan,
Deputy Premier Yigal Alton
and Foreign Minister Abba
Eban.
Rockefeller has arived with
two vice-presidents of the
bank and some other aides
from a visit to several Arab
oil producing states and he
seems to be convinced that
the oil boycott will be lifted
soon.
He stressed he came to Is-
rael on business not as a poli-
tician but because "we have
connections with Israeli
banks." From Israel he will
proceed to Egypt.
