West Bank Historic Homeland

(From the Encyclopedia
Judaica)
What is the "West Bank,"
that area that may stymie
the Arab-Israel peace nego-
tiations in Geneva?
It is the historical home-
land of the Jews. In fact,
the very word "Jew" comes
from the Hebrew Yehudi, a
term applied to members of
the tribe of Judah who lived
in part of what is now the
West Bank.
When the UN General As-
sembly decided in 1947 to
partition Palestine, the west
bank of the River Jordan was
assigned to Jordan and re-
mained under that country's
control for 20 years until its
occupation by Israel during
the Six-Day War. Today it is
an Israel administered area.
History records that as
early as '722 BCE, the king
of Assyria, Shalameneser,
captured Samaria (part of to-
day's West Bank) and set-
tled some tribes there who
assimilated with Israelites,
and current scholarship con-
siders the Samaritans as di-
rect descendants of the Jo-
seph tribes, Ephraim and
Manasseh. They claim to
have continuously occupied
their ancient territory in
Palestine, and a small Sam-
aritan community remains in
the area to this day.
Ruins excavated from the
former capital of this land,
called Shomron in Hebrew,
show that in approximately
800 BCE, King Omrl built
a palace which also served
as a fortress and which lat-
er was enlarged by King
Ahab. The ivories found in
the excavation indicate that
this was probably the "ivory
house" Ahab had built for
Jezebel, his consort. Herod
rebuilt the area in 25 BCE
and renamed the city, Se-
baste, after the Greek word
for Augustus, Rome's em-
emperor.
The West Bank also con-
tains Bethlehem, Jericho and
part of Jerusalem-cifies that

need no explanation of the
role they have played in his-
tory. Another city, less well
known but rich in symbolism
and meaning for Jews, is
Hebro n. David, after the
death of Saul, chose Hebron
as his royal city and was an-
nointed there as king of
Judah. Ultimately, Hebron
was where David was an-
nointed king of all Israel, so
it is truly a sacred Jewish
city.
