Sharon's Complaints About Conduct of War to Be Probed by Committee
JERUSALEM (JTA)—The
committee of inquiry into the
Yom Kippur War, headed by
Supreme Court. Justice Simon
Agranat, will review com-
plaints against (Res.) Gen.
I Ariel (Arik) Sharon, com-
mander of the division that
broke through Egyptian lines
and established an Israeli
bridgehead on the west bank
of the Suez Canal, it was
learned this week. _
The complaints have been
lodged by Gen. Shmuel Gon-
nen, Sharon's superior, who
was the target of charges by
Sharon in newspapers and
magazines here anad abroad
after the war ended.
Sharp differences of
opinion over the conduct of
the war developed between
Sharon and Gonnen and
other members of the Israeli
high command. Sharon pub-
licly accused the Israeli mili-
tary leadership of making
battlefield decisions on the
basis of politics. He himself
has been counter-charged
with politicking and was re-
lieved of his command on
the Egyptian front two weeks
ago. Sharon, founder of Li-
kud, was elected to the Knes-
set Dec. 31.
Gonnen, who had replaced
Sharon as commander of the
southern command t h r e e
months before the Yom Kip-
pur War, has filed his own
charges against the popular
reserves general.
They were submitted to
chief of staff Gen. David
Elazar, himself a target of
Sharon. Elazar forwarded
them to the Agranat com-
mittee.
One of the complaints
against Sharon stemmed
from an article in the Feb-
ruary 1974 edition of Har-
per's magazine by Amos
Perlmutter. The author, who
described himself as a per-
sonal friend of Sharon, quot-
ed the Sinai commander as
having said that "This war
was terribly mismanaged.
The casulties we lost in the
first two days were without
justification." Elswhere in
the article, Sharon was
sharply critical of former
Chief of Staff Gen. Haim
Bar Lev, Deputy Premier
Yigal Allon and the entire
Labor government, including
his onetime mentor, Defense
Minister Moshe Dayan.
Gonnen met with Premier
Golda Meir last week and
presented his complaints
against Sharon, the news-
paper Yediot Ahronot report-
ed. The meeting took place
before Sharon gave inter-
views to two local news-
papers in which he called for
Elazar's resignation.
The Agranat committee is
mandated to inquire only into
the initial stages of the Yom
Kippur War — when Israeli
forces, rushed to meet the
Egyptian - Syrian onslaught,
conducted a holding action.
The cabinet. Sunday issued
a 1 e n g t h y statement in
which Mrs. Meir, Dayan and
the entire cabinet expressed
their confidence in Elazar.
Sharon's statements were
rasied at the cabinet by
Health Minister Victor Shem-
tov and Tourism Minister
Moshe Kol. In the cabinet
statement, drafted by Minis-
ter-Without-Portfolio Isr a el
Galili, Mrs. Meir was quoted:
"We all esteem Elazar's ac-
tions before an during the
war. The whole cabinet had
confidence in Elazar, the
chief of staff." She then

Left ideas. In the newly-elect-
ed Knesset, Payil will be
the only Knesseter represent-
ing Moked, and as such he
promises to be one of the
most outspoken proponents
of a more dynamic Israel
peace policy.
Payil went into politics
only last year, after he left
the army against his will. He
then became the number one

— a merger between the
Maki (mainly Jewish) Corn-
munist Party, headed until
two years ago by Dr. Moshe
Sneh, and a group called
Tehelet Adorn (Blue Red) —
generally speaking, the New-
Left. Most of the members
define themselves as Zionists
weary of the old Socialist
parties, namely Mapai and
Ma pa m.
A veteran of Palmach, the
commandos of the pre-state
days, and the Israel Defense
Forces, he quickly climbed
up the military ladder, and
during the War of Independ-
ence he served as operations
officer in the Negev Brigade
under the command of now
Deputy Premier Yigal Allon.
Later, Payil served as a
deputy commander of the
general staff college and at
the end of his military career
as one of the most popular
commanders of the military
academy.
After two years, Payil of-
ficially left the army and
devoted himself entirely to
his studies at Tel Aviv Uni-
versity. By 1971 — he had
finished his work on his doc-
toral dissertation, on the
development of the Israeli
Defense Forces, and worked
as a lecturer of military
history.
When the run for the Knes-
set began at the beginning
of last year, Payil was a nat-
ural contender. He became
the leader of the new Moked
Party and made it all the
way to the Knesset, although

NEW YORK — The Na-
tional Conference of Shorn-
rim Societies is dedicated to
the proposition that the dis-
dain of young American Jews
for careers in public safety
fields is a prejudice which
must be corrected so that
more such Jews will choose
to be policemen, firemen and
correction officers.
In line with that belief, the
conference is planning a
long - range program to
change the image of such
careers for such Jews, ac-
cording to Louis Weiser, a
former New York City police-
man who has been executive
vice president of the confer-
ence for the past decade.
The Shomrim Society of
New York, of which Weiser
is a former president and of
which Joel Frankel is presi-
dent, recently. provided as-
sistance to the New York
City Police Department when
it sponsored a special re-
cruiting campaign last fall
to enlarge representation of
New York City minority
groups, including Jews, on
the_ police force.
The campaign to recruit
more Jewish men and women
for the police force was the
first in its history. Weiser
told the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency that a similar cam-
paign is being planned for
officers for New York City's
correction department.
The existence of the many
types of societies which make
up the national conference

strategy of the Egyptian
army was replaced by a re-
liance on military hardware.
Making these charges in in-
terviews in Maariv and Yediot
Aharonot, Sharon claimed
that since Itzhak Rabin left
the army, the Israel Defense
force "ceased to be a hril-
ish disinterest in careers in
the public safety field is far
from absolute. There are
Shomrim Societies also in
New Jersey, Illinois, Phila-
delphia, Washington, D. C.,
Massachusetts and Nassau
County.
One of the earliest of the
societies is Naer Tormid So-
ciety of New York, repre-
senting Jewish firemen,
which has some 600 mem-
bers, according to Weiser.
Most of the societies include
Jewish civilian employes as
members.
The. New York Shomrim
Society, which was started
in 1924, has about 2,800
members, including 1,000 ac-
tive members, the balance
being Jews who have retired
from the force.
Almost all of the societies
have scholarship programs
for children of members, of-
fering them a year's study
with first choice of college
in Israel. Weiser said that 50
such scholarships have been
provided by the New York
Shomrim Society.

ficial Jewish chaplain in the

partment, is spiritual direc-
tor of the New York Shorn-
