`From Shtetl to Stage Door' Falls a Bissele Short of Real Thing

"From Shtetl to Stage
Door," the production spon-
sored by the Temple Israel
Brotherhood Sunday at the
temple, was almost remin-
iscent of an evening at the
old Littman's People's Thea-
ter — almost, because for
those who could remember
those days, something was
missing.
The production, meant to
show the influence of the
music of the East European
shtetl on the Broadway stage,
did not have enough of the
people and shows that played
the theater. The evening did,
however, focus on perform-
ers and composers who
adapted Jewish melodies to
their works, and to Jews
who rose to stardom via the
New York Yiddish theater,
radio and TV.
Although there were some
unfortunate moments, such
as composer Dr. Jack Gott-
lieb's slipping microphone,
which at one point he called
"anti-Semite" and a faulty
slide projector that refused
at times to flash the "no
spitting in the theater" and
".remove your hat" signs, the
program was interesting,
especially to one born ATV
(after television).
