In front of Oakland Mall 585-2860 Suez Canal a 100-Year-Old Ditch With 4,000-Year-Old Problem, From the Encyclopedia Judaica Current negotiations be- tween Israel and Egypt in- volving the Suez Canal are but a continuation of a prob- lem nearly 4,000 years old. While the canal itself is little more than 100 years old, a canal connecting the Red Sea, the Bitter Lakes and the Nile Delta was in use under Pharaoh Seostris as early as the 20th Century BCE. This canal subsequent- ly passed through the hands of Pharaoh Neco, the Persian conqueror Darius I and the Romans, until the Caliph Al- Mansur, in the 8th Century BCE, blockaded it for mili- tary reasons, whereupon the canal fell into disuse. The present Suez Canal represents the fruits of the French dream to link the Mediterranean and the East by penetrating the isthmus of Suez, and the first surveys were begun during Napo- leon's occupation of Egypt from 1798 to 1801. Nearly seventy years were needed to complete construc- tion of the canal, however, and it was not officially opened until Nov. 17, 1869. Two famous Jews brought England into the Suez Canal's history when, in 1875, Great Britain, under the prodding of Disraeli and the financing of the Rothschilds, bought the shares of Suez Canal Company owned by the Khe- dive of Egypt. The acquisition of shares in the Suez Canal, was de- signed to ensure English con- trol over the vital route to India. Only seven years later, British troops were on the shores of the canal to begin an occupation and rule that would last nearly 80 years. For the state of Israel, the Suez Canal has been a bone of contention. Though an 1888 convention guaranteed pas- sage to all ships whether in peace or war, Egypt effec- tively blocked Israel's use since 1949, going so far as to capture and hold an Israel vessel and crew for three months in 1954. As far back as 1951, the UN Security Council de- nounced Egypt's blockade of the canal to Israel shipping, but the council was unable to sway the Egyptian rulers. On July 26, 1956, Egypt's President Nasser suddenly announced the nationaliza- tion of the Suez Canal Co. and, at the same time, the Arab terrorists, the fedayeen, stepped up their attacks against Israel. The terrorist attacks and the nationaliza- tion of the canal were, to many, clear signs that the Arabs were ready to go to war. Reform Day School a First for Canada TORONTO (JTA) — Offi- cials of the Leo Baeck Day School, scheduled to open here next September as the first Reform-sponsored day school in Canada, plans a cooperative effort with the Agnon School in Cleveland. David Steinhauer, the school's executive adminis- trator, has described it as seeking innovative ap- proaches in integrated gen- eral and J e wish studies, language instruction in Eng- lish, Hebrew and French, and individualized a n d experi- mental learning. Unable to abide Egypt's to- tal control of the canal, Eng- land and France provided air and logistic support to a strong Israeli force that in- vaded the Sinai. By Nov. 2, however. the General Assem- bly had forced the issue, and the army was withdrawn to the Israel borders. The Suez Canal was reopened in 1957. In 1959, Egypt again pre- vented shipping destined for Israel to pass through the canal. This situation endured until 1967 when, as a result of the Six-Day War, Egypt sank ships in the canal, ef- fectively blockading it for all ships.
