Debby is one of the few_
young people I know that has
read the Bible from cover to
cover, and three times at
that. As a child she was fas-
cinated by the great men
and events of the Bible. And
all through her teens (she
just turned 21), she read book
after book concerned with
the history of Israel—arche-
ology, ethics, the works. In
a word she was "hooked" on
the country, its vitality and
promise to the world and to
eternity. She became a true-
blue "Israelophile."
But Debby never had much
of a chance to get to Israel
and see for herself the vigor
and color permeating that
land of promise. She never
had a chance, that is, until
I happened to mention her
plight to several of my good
friends of the Jewish com-
munity, including D a n n y
Raskin (of The Jewish News)
and Percy Kaplan (of Jewish
National Fund). Both went to
work in earnest, slicing red
tape, removing roadblocks
and allied frustrations. And
after Debby had built herself
a bankroll for traveling,
through counter-jumping at a
local Royal Oak restaurant
and working as a key-punch
operator (she went to school
for this), she took a plane to
Israel in the fall of 1972.

half-and-half after she ar-
rived in Tel Aviv. She was
grilled thoroughly by security
men before she got off the
plane. She was given some of
the rough jobs about the kib-
utz—but it didn't faze her, be-
cause she was determined to
stick. And stick she did even
after some of the other volun-
teers gave up and went home.
She worked and studied
side by side with Russian ref-
ugees, youngsters from Per-
sia, from France, from Eng-
land—from all over the world
. . . and each week she grew
more sun-tanned and happy,
because she was associated
with the finest sort of young
people in one of the youngest
and most vibrant nations in
the world.
At the end of six months,
she could read and write He-
brew quite well, and speak
it, as she said, "with an
American accent." Then Ein
Harod's ulpan came to the
end of its six-month schedule.
Most youngsters Went home
for the summer, and Debby,
visa expired, came back to
us in May '73.
She was full of tales of the
many places she'd seen and
the people she loved. For a
week or so she was happy.
But it wasn't long before her
Israeli tan faded along with
her delight to be home, and
she began to be restless and
moody. She was ready to go
back.
After working through the
summer, she boarded a jet at
Metro and was off to Ein
Harod again . . . just five
days before the Yom Kippur
War!

What's a good Methodist
girl doing in Israel? That's
the question asked by my
Christian friends and neigh-
bors when I tell them that
my daughter, Debby, is a vol-
unteer at Kibutz Ein Harod
in the northern part of Israel.
I answer that she's a young
lady who knows her own
mind, and doesn't mind do-
ing her thing no matter if it's
thousands if miles away.
