Conservative Rabbi Says Halakha
Not Major Conversion Question

NEW YORK (JTA) — A
leading American Conserva-
tive rabbi said that the op-
position of the Orthodox rab-,
•binate inside and outside of
Israel, to conversions per :
formed by non-Orthodox
rabbis applied to such con-
versions even when perform-
ed fully in accordance with
Halakha, • Jewish religious
law.
Rabbi Wolfe Kelman, ex-
ecutive vice president of the
Rabbinical Assembly, the as-
s o c i a t i o n of Conservative
rabbis, said he fa-vored a
ehange in Israel's Law of Re-
n, now being demanded by

Party and backed by Ortho-
dox rabbis generally, in cur-
rent negotiations for a new
Israeli coalition government,
but only if the change speci-
fied simply conversions had
to be in accordance with
Halakha.
The RA was one of six
Conservative and Reform
organizations which joined in
a cable to Premier Golda
Meir Jan. 10 opposing the
NRP demand for a change
in the Law of Return.
On Sunday, 80 Reform and
Conservative synagogue offi-
cers from synagogues in the
U.S. departed for Israel to
press their demands that
Mrs. Meir not accept the
NRP demand.
Rabbi Kelman said that if
a Conservative rabbi per-
formed in Israel a conversion
fully in accord with halakhic
requirements, it would not
be recognized in Israel by
the Orthodox rabbinate,
of Jews.
He added "this is what we
are fighting." He said the
joint statement to Mrs. Meir
had been misinterpreted. "We
are not against Halakha,"' he
said.

Meanwhile, the world re-
nowned scholar Rabbi Joseph
B. Soloveitchik of Boston,
honorary president of Agu-
dath Horabonim (Union of
Orthodox Rabbis of the U. S.
and Canada) declared to the
leadership of Agudath Hora-
bonim that he absolutely op-
poses any compromise in the
"Who is a Jew" Law in
Israel.
Rabbi Soloveitchik said:
"The National Religious Party
in Israel may definitely not
withdraw her demand that
the Law of Return should be
amended so that it should
state explicity that conver-
sions will be recognized only
if they are performed in ac-
cordance with Halakha. Any
compromise is deceptive and
will not serve its purpose."
In New York, Harold M.
Jacobs, president of the Un-
ion of Orthodox Jewish Con-
gregations of America, con-
demned "the thinly veiled
threat of some Reform, Con-
servative and secular Jewish
groups to undermine the uni-
ty of the world Jewish com-
munity in support of the
state of Israel."
Reacting to statements is•
sued by these groups attack-
ing the National Religious
Party, Jacobs, in a telegram
to Prime Minister Meir, sup-
ported the party in its "move
toward coalition and the for-
mation of a stable new gov-
ernment."
Jacobs went on to object to
the position of the Reform
and Conservative groups as
"reflecting the alien Galut
(exile) mentality which
spawned their movements
and attacking the ancient
and common Jewish heritage
which is Israel's true
strength."

Mishkan Israel
to Get Torah

The Herbert and Harry
Gordon families have do-
nated a Sefer Torah to the
Mishkan Israel Nusach H'Ari
Lubavitcher Center in honor
of their parents, Mr. and
Mrs. Jacob Gordon and in
memory of their aunt, Min-
del Devorah Salomon, a sis-
ter to Mrs. Jacob Gordon.
The Sefer Torah, brought
by a new arrival from Rus-
sia, is one of the only re-
mains of a synagogue closed
down in Moscow.
In honor of the occasion, a
kidush and program has been
arranged for Feb. 9 by Her-
bert and Harry Gordon. A
complete meal, including
cholent, will be served follow-
ing 9:30 a.m. services. Mem-
bers and friends of the shul
and the Gordon family are
invited.
For information, call the
center, 548-2666.
