Lewis Strauss, Ex-AEC Chairman
NEW YORK (JTA) -
Funeral services will be held
in Washington today for
Lewis L. Strauss, former
chairman of the Atomic
Energy Commission, who
died at his farm home in
Brandy Station, Va., Mon-
day. He was 77.
The funeral will be held
at Cong. Emanu-El, the Re-
form synagogue of which
Strauss had been president
,sr
served as his personal sec-
retary during World War I.
He was a member of the
Atomic Energy Commission
from 1946 to 1950 and its
chairman from 1953 to 1958.
He led the successful battle
in the commission for de-
velopment of the hydrogen
bomb.
A self-taught amateur phy-
sicist, he had sought out
physicists fleeing from Nazi
Germany and learned from
them that uranium had been
fissioned in Germany, an
essential first step toward
creating an atomic bomb.
He also served as acting
secretary of commerce and
had been a partner in the
Kuhn-Loeb investment bank-
ing firm. He was born in
Charleston, W. Va.

HAIFA (JTA) - Dr. Ben-
Zion Kauders, international
vice president of Bnai Brith
since 1971, who was killed
Jan. 14 in a taxi-truck colli-
sion near Haifa, was praised
by International Bnai Brith
President David M. Blum-
berg as "an exemplary lead-
er who was devoted to the
maintenance of Jewish tradi-
tion and ideals."
Dr. Kauders, 66, resided
in Haifa and operated a flour
milling business.
Born in Hungary on May
27, 1907, he was a lawyer in
Budapest, a leader of the
Hungarian Jewish community
during World War II and
later was decorated by the
Israeli government for his
partisan activities.
Dr. Kauders was a mem-
ber of the Central Commit-
tee of the Zionist Organiza-
tion in Hungary and came
to Israel in 1945.

began his career as a copy

sports reporter and sports
columnist.
Israelis Give Blood
to Drive in NYC
NEW YORK (JTA) - A
delegation of officials from
the consulate general of Is-
rael here. headed by Consul
General David Rivlin, do-
nated a pint of blood each
in response to a general
appeal from the city's blood
bank to help_ end a blood
shortage and to express ap-
preciation to the citizens of
New York for their support
and actions in behalf of Is-
rael.
A spokesman for the con-
sulate general, who reported
this action, said that Dr.
William Hirsh, director of
the blood bank, thanked the
delegation and noted that the
blood shortage had caused a
number of operations to be
postponed.
