Atonement

By SARINA FLATT
12th Grade,
Akiva Hebrew Day School

Yom Kippur
"Forgive us, 0' Lord,
for we have sinned,".
The righteous and the lowly,
pleading together;

The room was filled with a lazy
light
Peaceful,
as if to rest a soul
before starting again;
and then it came.

The Siren.
Loud and Strong.
I remember the crying sound.
up and Down, up and Down.
Down? Not only to the shelters,
the faces.

Wrinkled with worry
She had a son on the front.
Eighteen years old.
Young but sad,
She was carrying a Child.
"When will Mine die?

I thought.
Why are they dying—
especially on THIS day.
on this day, of life,
not of death.
Are they dying—instead of me?

And all the Country
had tears in Her eyes.

HILLEL
HAPPENINGS

By JUDY GUNSBERG
Mrs. Levy's ninth grade
world history class spent the
day recently at the Detroit
Institute of Arts.
In the lecture room, we
were given a historical ex-
planation, with slides, of the
incredible reign of King
Amenhotep IV and his queen,
the famous Nefertiti.
King Amenhotep, who
changed his name to Akhena-
ten, meaning "useful to
Aton," abolished- the ancient
religion of Egypt and order-
ed his kingdom to worship
the god Aton, the sun god.
Everyone was forced to wor-
ship the god through the
king, Akhenaten. The most
amazing product of the reign
of Akhenaten was the out-
standing art 'work.
The exhibit had collec-
tions of relief maps from
all over the world. Por-
traits of the king himself,
the beautiful Nefertiti and
the princesses of the time
have been almost perfectly
perserved. Most of the sta-
tues and carvings are of the
same style and give us a
good idea of the way of life
during this famous reign.
Following the lecture we
spent the rest of the morning
visiting the exhibit.
By the end of the day, we
were all rather tired of walk-
ing and climbed gladly back
into the cars only to find
ourselves at Howard John-
son's to celebrate a class-
mate's birthday. We finally
returned to the school, after
a totally enjoyable day, in
time to catch our buses
home.
