Rep. John D. Dingell (D-
Mich. 16th District), who held
three days of congressional
hearings on the oil shortage
issue and the need for oil
industry d a t a , commented
that "Whether or not there
is an energy crisis, there
certainly is a crisis of con-
fidence."
Rep. Dingell, chairman of
the House Small business sub-
committee on the activities
of regulatory agencies, called
the hearings based on his
questions on the validity of
the government basing U.S.
national energy policies and
conservation plans on unveri-
fied oil industry data.
In his testimony, R e p .
Dingell charged, "the gov-
ernment is making public
policy in a total vacuum in
this critical energy area
which has such an impact on
the well-being of our econ-
omy. In terms of getting the
facts in the energy area, the
federal government has com-
pletely delegated its respons-
ibility to the oil industry."
The burden of the energy
crisis is not evenly distrib-
uted — instead it appears
that a few oil companies are
profiting handsomely from
the hardships and sacrifices
of the rest of the nation," he
said.
